Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been handed significant grid penalties for the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix following the installation of new power unit components. The changes have reshuffled the starting order for Sunday's race at the Interlagos circuit.
Verstappen will start from the back of the grid after Red Bull confirmed a complete power unit change. Ferrari drivers Hamilton and Leclerc have both been issued 10-place grid penalties after fitting their fifth internal combustion engine of the season, exceeding the permitted allocation of four.
Mercedes driver George Russell has also incurred a five-place grid penalty for a similar engine component change. The sanctions were confirmed following final practice sessions on Saturday, where Verstappen set the fastest lap time ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur held discussions with Hamilton and Leclerc earlier this week following a collision between the two teammates at the Mexico City Grand Prix. Both drivers and the team are now focused on navigating the challenging grid positions in Brazil.
Weather forecasts indicate a high probability of rain throughout the weekend, which could influence the race strategy for those starting further back. Verstappen has previously demonstrated success from deep in the field at this venue, including a notable victory from 17th position in 2024.
Formula 1 officials also announced on Saturday that the Interlagos circuit has secured a contract extension to host the Brazilian Grand Prix until 2035. F1 president Stefano Domenicali stated that the venue remains a vital part of the sport's history and future.
