Michigan defeated Maryland in a four-set volleyball match on Saturday night, dealing a blow to the Terrapins' hopes for Big Ten Tournament eligibility. The Wolverines controlled the contest in College Park, winning 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 25-20.
The match saw Michigan maintain a consistent offensive edge, recording 13 blocks compared to Maryland's six. Despite a spirited third-set comeback from the home side, the Wolverines regained control in the final frame to close out the victory.
Maryland head coach Adam Hughes expressed disappointment following the result, particularly regarding the impact on his senior players during their final home appearance. He praised his team's resilience, noting that they continued to compete until the final point.
"I was gutted; it stings a little bit for the seniors, a great crowd," Hughes said. "I didn't think we quit; I thought they made a couple plays late. Unfortunately, we were on the opposite end of what I wanted."
The Terrapins struggled with offensive consistency throughout the evening, finishing with six more errors than their opponents. While Maryland showed significant improvement in the third set, hitting .351 compared to Michigan's .205, they were unable to sustain that momentum into the fourth set.
Marlee Sivak and Ava Brown led the efforts for Maryland, with Sivak providing an early spark at the net and Brown contributing throughout the match. However, Michigan's defensive pressure proved difficult to overcome as the match progressed.
The loss complicates Maryland's path to the Big Ten Tournament, as the team now faces a difficult road to remain eligible for the postseason. The Wolverines will look to build on this performance as they continue their conference schedule.
