The defending champion has pulled out of the season-ending tournament in Indian Wells due to a viral illness.

World number one Elena Rybakina withdraws from WTA Finals

World number one Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from the WTA Finals in Indian Wells just one day before the start of the season-ending championships. The 27-year-old confirmed her absence on Saturday, citing a viral illness as the reason she is unable to compete.

A spokesperson for the WTA confirmed the medical nature of the withdrawal. Marta Kostyuk will replace the top-ranked player in Group One, with the tournament scheduled to begin on Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

"I am really sad to inform all my fans and supporters that I unfortunately have to withdraw from the WTA Finals this year," Rybakina said in a statement. "I've had an incredible season but my body is just not physically ready to compete."

Rybakina, who was aiming to become the first player since 2014 to win back-to-back WTA Finals titles, will now focus on recovery. She noted that she intends to spend time resting at home to prepare for the 2027 season.

The Kazakh player concludes a dominant 2026 campaign during which she secured the year-end world number one ranking. Her season included victories at both the Australian Open and the US Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Rybakina finishes the year with a 54-14 match record and four titles. Her performance throughout the season was highlighted by 438 aces and 1,775 winners, establishing her as the tour leader in key statistical categories.
