Scott Parker begins West Ham reign following dramatic draw at Cardiff

The newly appointed West Ham head coach assesses his new squad ahead of the weekend trip to Blackburn Rovers.

Scott Parker begins West Ham reign following dramatic draw at Cardiff

Scott Parker admitted his dramatic return to West Ham United left him struggling for his voice following a thrilling fightback to secure a draw against Cardiff City in his opening match in charge.

The 46-year-old manager arrived at the club earlier in the week following the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo, taking over a side currently competing in the EFL Championship.

Parker watched from the touchline on Wednesday as his new team overturned a three-goal deficit during the second half to finish level at three-all, sparked by a triple half-time tactical change and an inspired performance from Jarrod Bowen.

Reflecting on his return to coaching after his departure from Burnley last April, Parker likened his sudden vocal strain to putting on shoes after a long holiday, noting that his vocal cords were simply unaccustomed to shouting instructions from the touchline.

West Ham sit in eighth place in the Championship standings ahead of their upcoming fixture against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, where they will be supported by a travelling contingent of seven thousand fans at Ewood Park.

The manager emphasized the demanding nature of the second tier, pointing out that historical stature guarantees nothing without absolute commitment, defensive solidity, and a collective humility across the squad.

Parker previously secured promotions with Fulham, AFC Bournemouth, and Burnley, building a reputation as a specialist in guiding clubs out of the Championship and back into the Premier League at the first attempt.

To bolster his coaching staff, Parker has brought former club captain and sporting director Mark Noble into an assistant coaching role to act as a crucial sounding board and help him navigate the squad dynamics.

The recruitment department, led by director of recruitment Nils Koppen, will evaluate potential squad improvements ahead of the January transfer window, though Parker intends to give all current players a clean slate.

Players such as Soungoutou Magassa and Edson Alvarez are set to receive opportunities under the new management team as West Ham seek greater defensive stability and tactical balance in their pursuit of promotion.

Discussions with interim chief executive Karim Virani and major shareholder Daniel Kretinsky focused primarily on the immediate transition and shared vision for the club rather than immediate January transfer funds.

West Ham aim to maintain the momentum gained from their second-half display in Wales as they prepare for the challenging away fixture against Blackburn, hoping to narrow the gap on the division's automatic promotion places.
