Chris Lynn served one-month cricket ban after positive cocaine test

Australian cricketer Chris Lynn served a one-month suspension from professional cricket after returning a positive anti-doping test for a metabolite of cocaine earlier this year. The thirty-six-year-old batter was tested on 18 July while representing English county side Northants during the T20 Blast competition.

The English cricket regulator imposed the one-month ban covering the entire month of August, though the disciplinary action only came to public attention on Friday. Lynn tested positive for benzoylecgonine following Northants' quarter-final victory in the T20 tournament.

The substance detected in his sample is a known metabolite of cocaine, leading to immediate regulatory scrutiny under anti-doped protocols. The disciplinary proceedings moved through confidential channels before the sanction was finally brought to light by cricket regulators and subsequent media reporting.

During the evening of 15 July and into the early hours of 16 July, Lynn admitted to using cocaine over a period of several hours. That specific timeframe placed the consumption outside of direct matchday competition windows, a factor that ultimately influenced the severity of the sanction.

Earlier on the night of his substance use, Lynn had taken part in Northants' quarter-final win in the T20 Blast. During that crucial fixture, the veteran top-order hitter was forced to retire hurt before his innings concluded.

The initial penalty proposed by the regulatory body was a three-month suspension from all forms of professional cricket. However, that ban was subsequently reduced to one month after Lynn agreed to undergo and complete a mandated treatment program.

By serving the suspension during August, Lynn missed a designated portion of the domestic calendar, though the sanction remained confidential at the time. The revelation on Friday surprised many followers of the domestic English game and the wider Twenty20 circuit.

Following the conclusion of his commitments with Northants, Lynn travelled from England to Sri Lanka. His objective was to feature in the Lanka Premier League franchise tournament, but his stint in South Asia was cut short.

The Australian player managed just one appearance in the Lanka Premier League before sustaining a leg injury. That physical setback ruled him out of further participation in the tournament and coincided with the enforcement of his disciplinary measures.

Lynn has not played any professional cricket since picking up the leg injury during his brief spell in Sri Lanka. His rehabilitation and the aftermath of the suspension have kept him on the sidelines throughout the subsequent months.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Australian domestic season, Lynn is yet to secure a contract with any Big Bash League franchise. Reports from Australian media this week indicated that the Melbourne Renegades were strongly positioned to sign him for the tournament.

The veteran batter has built a reputation as a prolific short-format run-scorer across numerous global leagues. His extensive career includes prominent stints in the Big Bash League, the Indian Premier League, and various other domestic T20 competitions around the world.

At international level, Lynn represented Australia in four one-day internationals and 18 Twenty20 internationals. Despite his domestic success in franchise cricket, he has not pulled on the green and gold shirt for his country since 2018.

The regulatory handling of the case highlights strict anti-doping protocols within English domestic cricket and the governing bodies overseeing professional players. The agreement to reduce his sentence following treatment reflects standard pathways for out-of-competition infractions involving recreational substances.

As cricket authorities continue to monitor player welfare and conduct, the case of the experienced Australian remains a notable talking point. Lynn will now look toward his fitness recovery and potential recruitment for upcoming domestic T20 action.
