Gaurav Khanna hits back at Pramod Bhagat over Asian Para Games row

Indian para badminton coach Gaurav Khanna defends his medal predictions amid a growing dispute over selection discrepancies.

Gaurav Khanna hits back at Pramod Bhagat over Asian Para Games row

Indian para badminton coach Gaurav Khanna has strongly defended himself against allegations that his social media predictions negatively impacted athletes at the recent Asian Para Games. Khanna dismissed the claims as a misleading public narrative designed to distract authorities from selection issues he formally raised.

The controversy emerged following Khanna's now-deleted social media post published during the continental multisport event in Aichi-Nagoya. In the post, he correctly predicted that India would secure 16 medals at the Games, a decrease from the 21 medals won during the previous edition in 2022.

The final medal tally for India matched his forecast exactly, consisting of three gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals. However, several athletes and officials argued that publishing such predictions created undue psychological pressure ahead of crucial medal matches.

Pramod Bhagat, a six-time world champion who secured a silver medal in the SL3 category after losing to Nitesh Kumar, publicly criticised the coach. Bhagat described the social media activity as extremely unprofessional and ethically wrong, prompting calls for an official inquiry.

Adding to the criticism, India para badminton chairman K Prabhakar Rao stated he would formally raise the matter with the Badminton Association of India for appropriate action. Athletes subsequently sought an investigation through the Sports Authority of India and the Sports Ministry.

Responding to the backlash, Khanna issued a detailed statement addressing the timing of the accusations and the motivation behind them. He pointed out that public complaints only began on October 27, several days after the conclusion of the tournament and the deletion of the post.

Khanna suggested the accusations were timed deliberately to divert attention away from documented irregularities in squad selection. He claimed that raising these selection discrepancies with higher authorities triggered an orchestrated campaign to discredit his professional standing.

Detailing the timeline of the contentious post, Khanna noted it appeared briefly at approximately nine o'clock in the evening on October 22 and was removed within minutes. He questioned how athletes preparing for finals could have been genuinely distracted by such a fleeting online presence.

The coach specifically questioned Bhagat's preparation routine ahead of the gold medal match, raising concerns about late-night social media use. He argued that athletes should be resting rather than browsing digital platforms hours before major international competitions.

Moving beyond the medal count debate, Khanna highlighted the omission of several top-ranked athletes from the national contingent. He asked why prominent players such as Chirag Baretha, Ammu Mohan, Shashank Kumar, and Manisha Patel were left off the final squad list.

Khanna maintained that written representations submitted by deserving athletes regarding their exclusion had been ignored by the administration. He alleged that administrative oversights ultimately cost the national delegation at least four viable medal opportunities in Japan.

Furthermore, the coach expressed disappointment that government bodies like the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports relied on flawed administrative narratives. He believes technical clarifications were overlooked during the preparation phase for the continental games.

Describing the criticisms from players like Bhagat as personal attempts to settle past disagreements, Khanna stood firm on his professional assessment. He reiterated that his primary motivation remains the integrity and future development of the sport within the country.

The ongoing dispute highlights underlying tensions between coaching staff and administrators within the national para badminton setup. Previous successes on the international stage have often been overshadowed by selection debates and administrative friction regarding athlete representation.

As stakeholders prepare to approach governing bodies with formal complaints, the future of coaching structures and selection committees remains uncertain. Further reviews by the Badminton Association of India are expected in the coming weeks to address both the social media controversy and the underlying selection grievances.
