The University of Memphis football team produced a commanding offensive display to defeat the Army Black Knights 49-22 in their homecoming matchup on Halloween night. Marcus Stokes led the charge for the Tigers with a stellar performance, orchestrating an attack that overwhelmed the visitors from the opening whistle to the final quarter.
With this victory, Memphis improved their record to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Army dropped to 5-3 for the season and 4-2 in the standings. The Tigers' offense accumulated an impressive 554 total yards, significantly outgaining their opponents who managed 365 total yards over the course of the sixty minutes.
The hosts wasted little time asserting control when quarterback Stokes connected with Jermane Hayes for a 13-yard touchdown pass to cap an 80-yard opening drive. Philippe Laforge added the extra point to give Memphis an early seven-point advantage in front of the home supporters at the stadium.
Army responded swiftly on their ensuing possession as Godspower Nwawuihe surged into the end zone from five yards out. Dawson Jones converted the kick to level the score at seven apiece, keeping the contest competitive through the early stages of the opening period.
Stokes and Hayes combined once more early in the second quarter, this time from five yards out, to restore the lead for the hosts following a swift five-play drive. However, Army struck back again when Cale Hellums threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Samari Howard to make it 14-14.
Memphis pulled away before halftime as Jaylin Carter punched in a one-yard rushing score to cap an eight-play sequence. Stokes then found Jemyri Davis for a 15-yard touchdown strike just before the interval, extending the home advantage to 28-14.
The third quarter continued in the same vein as Stokes picked out Davis again, this time for a 26-yard touchdown connection to stretch the margin further. Army tried to mount a response when Hellums scored on a two-yard run, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass to Zach Mundell.
Any hopes of a late comeback were firmly extinguished in the final period as Stokes powered over for a one-yard rushing touchdown himself. Carter then sealed the comprehensive victory by adding his second rushing score of the evening, plunging in from three yards out.
Stokes finished the game with exceptional numbers through the air and on the ground, directing 27 first downs for his team while maintaining exceptional control of the possession clock. The Memphis offensive line completely neutralized the Army defensive front, allowing their playmakers to dictate the tempo throughout the contest.
Memphis will look to carry this momentum into their next fixture when they travel to face South Florida on Thursday, November 12. The Tigers will aim to maintain their strong conference standing as the latter stages of the college football season approach.
