Coventry City climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a comfortable 3-1 victory against Sunderland at the CBS Arena on Saturday evening. Frank Lampard's side capitalised on defensive errors from the visitors to secure a much-needed three points that leaves their opponents rooted to the bottom of the table.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute before Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the advantage shortly before half-time. Jack Rudoni effectively sealed the contest early in the second half, rendering Enzo Le Fée's penalty little more than a consolation for the visitors, who finished with 10 men.
The breakthrough arrived after a defensive mix-up when Trai Hume's attempted clearance struck teammate Luke O'Nien, allowing Sakamoto to collect the loose ball and arrow a precise shot into the far corner. Sunderland squandered a golden opportunity to equalise six minutes later when Brian Brobbey dragged his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Coventry punished that miss before the interval when Chris Rigg gave away possession and O'Nien was dispossessed by Awoniyi. The striker powered past several challenges before beating goalkeeper Robin Roefs with the aid of a deflection off Omar Alderete to make it 2-0.
Any hopes of a Sunderland comeback were extinguished shortly after the restart when Rudoni unleashed a shot that again deflected off the unfortunate Alderete and past Roefs. The visitors offered brief resistance when Ethan Pinnock handled O'Nien's strike inside the area, allowing Le Fée to send Carl Rushworth the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.
Sunderland's frustrations boiled over during stoppage time when Alderete received a second yellow card and was sent off. The defeat leaves the Wearside club winless in their past seven league matches and sitting on just five points from nine games, their lowest tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since the 2016-17 season.
Coventry manager Frank Lampard expressed satisfaction with the response following their disappointing defeat against Fulham the previous weekend. Lampard noted that margins are tight in the division and emphasised the enormous physical and mental energy required to secure victories in the Premier League.
Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris pointed to the demanding nature of balancing domestic commitments with a first-ever European campaign. Le Bris admitted that playing in continental competition typically costs teams points over the course of a season, but stressed that his squad must find ways to improve their performances and regain their confidence.
