Tom Nolan secured the biggest victory of his mixed martial arts career by defeating veteran Renato Moicano with a third-round technical knockout in the main event of UFC Vegas 123 at the Meta Apex facility in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The 26-year-old Australian weathered early grappling pressure from the Brazilian before turning the tide late in the second round, ultimately finishing the bout at 1:28 of the third round to claim his sixth consecutive victory in the UFC lightweight division.
The headline bout did not unfold without significant controversy, as referee Dan Miragliotta intervened late in the second round to stand the fighters up while Moicano had established a body triangle and controlled Nolan's back on the canvas. The decision drew immediate criticism from observers and fighters alike, providing Nolan with a reprieve just as he was attempting to defend against the submission attempts of the seasoned veteran.
Seizing the opportunity immediately following the restart, Nolan unleashed a damaging knee that visibly shook Moicano in the closing seconds of the middle frame. Carrying that momentum into the third round, the 6-foot-3 contender continued his offensive pressure with strikes before securing another impactful knee and transitioning to dominant ground and pound.
Elbows and punches to the temple rendered Moicano unable to intelligently defend himself, prompting the referee to halt the contest shortly after the start of the final round. Nolan improved his professional record to 12 wins and one loss with the statement performance.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment of the fight in his post-match remarks, Nolan acknowledged the crowd reaction to the referee's intervention while crediting his preparation at City Kickboxing. The victory moves the surging contender closer to the upper tier of the lightweight rankings.
For Moicano, the result marks a setback in his campaign among the promotion's elite 155-pound competitors. The longtime veteran holds a record of 27-8-1 following the defeat at the Nevada venue.
In the co-main event of the evening, undefeated welterweight Jacobe Smith maintained his perfect professional record with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Randy Brown. The former collegiate All-American relied on relentless wrestling, securing timely takedowns and nearly nine minutes of control time to earn identical 30-27 scores from all three judges.
Smith advanced his career record to 14-0 with the first decision win of his tenure in the organization. Brown dropped to 20-9 following the loss.
Elsewhere on the main card, Cody Durden defeated Ode Osbourne by unanimous decision with identical 29-28 scorecards in their flyweight encounter. Luana Santos secured a similar unanimous decision victory over Yana Santos in the women's bantamweight division, also by 29-28 scores across the board.
In other preliminary action, Jean-Paul Lebosnoyani stopped Farman Hasanov with punches at 2:11 of the third round in a welterweight bout, and Dakota Hope edged Francis Marshall by split decision in a 148-pound catchweight contest. Rodrigo Sezinando rounded out the main card results by defeating Theodor Berggren via technical knockout due to a doctor stoppage at the conclusion of the second round.
