Andreas Almgren and Sheila Chepkirui claim New York City Marathon titles

Andreas Almgren made a stunning impact in his marathon debut, winning the New York City Marathon men's title on Sunday. The Swedish middle-distance runner pulled away in the final mile to cross the finish line in 2 hours 6 minutes 1 second.

In the women's division, Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya reclaimed the title she first won in 2024. Chepkirui secured her victory with a late sprint, finishing the race in 2 hours 24 minutes 36 seconds to fend off a strong challenge from her competitors.

Almgren's victory marks a rare achievement in the event's recent history, as he became the first runner born outside of Africa to win the men's race since Brazil's Marilson Gomes dos Santos in 2008. He edged out Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa in the closing stages.

Chepkirui faced intense pressure from last year's winner, Hellen Obiri of Kenya, and American runner Jessica McClain. McClain mounted a late surge for second place, but Chepkirui's decisive dash to the line ensured she regained her status as champion.

The wheelchair races saw continued dominance from Swiss athletes. Marcel Hug claimed his eighth men's title, finishing just one second ahead of American Daniel Romanchuk, while Catherine Debrunner secured a commanding victory in the women's division.

The 2026 event marked the 50th anniversary of the race's iconic five-borough course format. Approximately 60,000 participants took part in the marathon, navigating the 26.2-mile route across the city under sunny, cool conditions that peaked at 61 degrees Fahrenheit.

The race remains one of the world's most prestigious marathons, drawing elite athletes and thousands of recreational runners. Organizers confirmed that the event proceeded smoothly, with spectators lining the course throughout the five boroughs to support the competitors.
