Pakistan Football Federation sets sights on youth development following U-15 World Cup campaign

The Pakistan Football Federation has reaffirmed its strategic commitment to building a distinct national football identity, placing youth development and stronger domestic structures at the core of its future plans. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday, federation officials outlined their long-term vision following Pakistan's historic participation in the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan.

Head Coach Ahsanullah Khan stated that the international tournament was approached primarily as a vital developmental opportunity rather than a results-driven campaign. He noted that the primary objective was to expose young players to different international footballing cultures, test their capabilities against diverse opposition, and accumulate essential match experience without the pressure of expectations.

Ahsanullah emphasised that the coaching staff encouraged the squad to express themselves freely on the pitch and focus relentlessly on mastering the fundamental skills of the game. He observed that established footballing nations consistently excel due to their superior execution of the basics, adding that replicating this disciplined approach is central to Pakistan's footballing blueprint moving forward.

Expressing strong optimism about the country's potential, the head coach stated that mastering these core fundamentals could eventually allow Pakistan to compete with the top football nations globally. He expressed gratitude to PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani for ensuring the team's participation in the learning experience, while also acknowledging the dedication of parents who travelled abroad to support the young athletes.

Addressing specific areas requiring technical improvement, Ahsanullah identified the execution of basic skills and defensive transitions as primary weaknesses exposed during the tournament. He stressed that bridging these competitive gaps will require sustained training periods, patience, and continued exposure to high-level international competition.

PFF Technical Director Adeel Rizki underscored that the tournament provided a clear benchmark to assess Pakistan's current standing against international opponents. He reiterated that competitive outcomes were secondary to developmental milestones, allowing the technical department to map out necessary improvements for the upcoming seasons.

Turning his attention to the domestic structure, Rizki stressed that reorganising local football is essential for the sport's long-term survival and growth in the country. He explained that the federation's immediate focus is establishing a clear, structured pathway from the grassroots upwards to ensure talented players are consistently identified and nurtured.

Director of Media and Communications Umaid Wasim highlighted the ongoing cooperation regarding government-run training facilities and infrastructure venues. He noted that infrastructural support, including accommodation arrangements for participants during domestic youth competitions, remains vital for nurturing emerging talent across the country.

Reflecting on the team's on-field performances, young player Ilhan Khan expressed pride in representing Pakistan on the international stage. He believed the squad proved its ability to compete fiercely against strong opponents such as Jordan, noting that minor missed opportunities at critical moments ultimately prevented the team from finishing higher in the tournament standings. Fellow player Owais also extended his appreciation to the federation leadership for continuous encouragement throughout the campaign.

The federation now aims to translate the valuable lessons learned in Azerbaijan into sustained structural progress. Officials confirmed that future efforts will concentrate heavily on expanding domestic competitions and refining the talent identification pathway for the next generation of Pakistani footballers.
