Houston Astros acquire pitcher Evan Reifert from Tampa Bay Rays

The Houston Astros are bolstering their pitching staff ahead of the upcoming Major League Baseball season by acquiring right-handed pitcher Evan Reifert from the Tampa Bay Rays. The transaction, announced late Friday evening, sees the 27-year-old minor-league standout heading to Houston while cash considerations move in the opposite direction to Tampa Bay.

Reifert spent the 2026 campaign at Triple-A Durham within the Tampa Bay organization, where he put up impressive numbers out of the bullpen. Over 46 appearances, the right-hander recorded a 2.48 earned run average, registering 81 strikeouts across 58 innings of work while continuing to knock on the door of his major league debut.

The trade also provides the Rays with crucial roster flexibility ahead of upcoming offseason deadlines. By moving Reifert, Tampa Bay clears a potential 40-man roster spot and avoids making a difficult protection decision regarding the pitcher ahead of the Rule 5 draft.

Throughout his six-year minor-league career, Reifert has established a reputation as a reliable strikeout arm with a cumulative 2.91 ERA. Across 234.2 minor-league innings, he has racked up 377 strikeouts and limited opposing hitters to a meager .174 batting average, relying predominantly on a sinking fastball and a sharp breaking slider.

Originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 30th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of North Iowa Area Community College, Reifert opted to continue his collegiate career before signing with the Milwaukee Brewers as an undrafted free agent in July 2020. He was subsequently traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in November 2021 in exchange for infielder Mike Brosseau.

His journey also included a brief stint with the Washington Nationals after being selected in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. However, after failing to crack Washington's Opening Day roster for the 2025 season, Reifert was returned to the Rays under the rules of the draft.

The Astros hope his strong minor-league metrics will translate to success at the major league level as they evaluate and reshape their pitching staff during the winter months. Reifert will report to Houston's organization aiming to secure a spot in the major league bullpen during spring training.
