Australia to face Samoa in Rugby League World Cup semi-final

The Kangaroos prepare for a high-stakes showdown at Allianz Stadium after the tournament field narrowed to the final four teams.

Australia to face Samoa in Rugby League World Cup semi-final

The Rugby League World Cup has reached its knockout stage, with hosts Australia set to face Samoa in the semi-finals this Sunday at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. The Kangaroos enter the match as tournament favourites, aiming for a fourth consecutive title.

Australia secured their place in the final four after an undefeated run through the pool stages, though coach Kevin Walters’ side has faced criticism for inconsistent performances. Despite victories over Fiji and the Cook Islands, the team has struggled with errors and disconnection.

Samoa confirmed their semi-final spot following a high-intensity clash against Tonga on Sunday. Although Tonga emerged victorious in that encounter, the competitive nature of the match underscored the depth of talent currently available to both Pacific nations.

The Australian squad faces internal pressure beyond the field, with several key players including Latrell Mitchell, Cam Munster, and Harry Grant currently navigating contract negotiations. Coach Walters is expected to focus on tactical cohesion to counter the physical threat posed by Samoa.

In the other half of the draw, New Zealand will face Tonga. The Kiwis have demonstrated dominant form, scoring 160 points in their last two matches against the Cook Islands and Fiji, positioning themselves as a significant threat to Australia’s title defence.

The Kangaroos’ forward pack remains a point of scrutiny, as the team has opted for mobility over traditional size. To succeed against Samoa, Australia will likely need to utilise their edge attack to stretch the opposition’s defensive line effectively.

Selection decisions remain a talking point for the hosts, with Reece Walsh currently favoured at fullback over James Tedesco. Meanwhile, halfback Sam Walker is facing increased competition for his spot from Tom Dearden as the tournament reaches its conclusion.
