Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli make weight in Riyadh for WBC title fight

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Christian Mbilli both successfully made weight on Friday in Riyadh ahead of their WBC super-middleweight world title showdown. The high-profile championship bout takes place on Saturday at the Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia, proceeding despite recent security concerns in the capital.

Both fighters tipped the scales at 12st or 76 kilograms before taking part in a tense but respectful final face-off. The event marks Alvarez's return to the ring following his defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2025, while the undefeated Mbilli prepares for the first defence of his title.

Alvarez enters the ring for the 69th time in his professional career, which began nearly 21 years ago in October 2005. The Mexican star reflected on his longevity and the significance of challenging for championship gold once again after a long tenure at the very top of the sport.

This is very important for me, I have been doing this for 21 years and won my first world title 16 years ago, Alvarez said. My experience is different, he hasn't faced anyone like me and I'll teach him tomorrow.

Mbilli, the 31-year-old champion who was elevated to the WBC belt in January, carries an unblemished professional record into the contest. Born in Cameroon and training in Canada, he has won 29 of his 30 fights with one draw, securing 24 victories by stoppage.

Tomorrow night I will beat him in every way, Mbilli said. I have the best condition and technique. A win would change my life a lot. It will be a fight of the year.

The build-up to the fight has unfolded against a turbulent backdrop in the region, featuring travel advisories and security concerns following reported missile interceptions over Riyadh earlier in the week. While several other international sporting exhibitions and motorsport rounds in the country have been cancelled, the major combat sports fixture remained scheduled.

Friday's weigh-in ceremony featured a traditional Mariachi band performance, setting the tone for a fight card promoted under the banner of Mexico versus the world. Alvarez will step into a bout without holding a world title for the first time since 2015.

The undercard features further championship action as Mexico's Jaime Munguia defends his WBA super-middleweight title against Nikita Zon. In addition, Rafael Espinoza puts his WBO featherweight belt on the line against Ricardo Blandon.

Another scheduled match on the bill was altered earlier in the week when Mexican fighter Lindolfo Delgado withdrew from his vacant IBF light-welterweight bout against Artur Biyarslanov. Combat sports fans around the world can watch the entire card live via pay-per-view.

As both fighters complete their final preparations behind closed doors, attention turns to Saturday night's opening bell in Riyadh. Alvarez aims to reclaim his status among boxing's elite, while Mbilli seeks the defining victory of his professional career.
