Thunder lose Chet Holmgren for up to 10 weeks with knee injury

Oklahoma City suffer another major blow as Chet Holmgren undergoes biological treatment for a patellar tendon tear.

Thunder lose Chet Holmgren for up to 10 weeks with knee injury

Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered a devastating blow to their roster after the franchise announced that center Chet Holmgren will be sidelined for the next eight to 10 weeks with a right knee injury. The announcement comes as part of a severe injury crisis for the organization, which has simultaneously lost multiple key starters at the beginning of the new campaign.

The Thunder revealed that Holmgren underwent a biological treatment on Friday to address a patellar tendon tear in his right knee. The medical procedure will keep the promising big man out of action for an extended period, dealing a significant setback to Oklahoma City's plans in the competitive Western Conference.

Holmgren first experienced mild discomfort in the affected knee on October 25 during a fixture against the Los Angeles Clippers. Prior to being sidelined, the center had started the season strongly, averaging 12 points, 9.3 rebounds, and three blocks per game.

The absence of Holmgren marks his first extended spell on the sidelines since he sustained a pelvic fracture in November 2024. Following that previous layoff, he returned in the spring of 2025 to help power the Thunder through a successful championship run, before featuring in 69 games during an All-Defensive campaign last term.

Compounding the team's difficulties, guard Cason Wallace has also been ruled out for the foreseeable future after undergoing left shoulder surgery. Wallace sustained his injury during the same October 25 encounter against the Clippers and will be re-evaluated prior to the conclusion of the regular season.

Wallace had contributed averages of 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game before his unfortunate setback. His extended absence further depletes the defensive resources available to the coaching staff during a demanding phase of the schedule.

The double blow follows confirmation regarding Jalen Williams, who suffered a broken left fibula and a dislocated left ankle in the same game against Los Angeles. Williams underwent successful surgery involving the reconstruction of ankle ligaments and will similarly be evaluated before the season ends.

Williams had established himself as a reliable offensive contributor, averaging 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. With Holmgren, Wallace, and Williams all sidelined, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Isaiah Hartenstein remain as the only active players from the team's opening-night starting lineup.

Further straining the roster, guard Alex Caruso has been ruled out of Saturday's upcoming fixture against the Houston Rockets due to a right ankle sprain. The accumulation of injuries leaves the coaching staff heavily reliant on depth options as the team attempts to maintain momentum.

Players such as Jared McCain, Ajay Mitchell, and Kenrich Williams are expected to see elevated playing time in the coming weeks. The squad will need collective contributions to replicate the production and defensive solidity provided by the missing starters.

Despite the mounting physical toll, the Thunder have made a positive 4-1 start to the new campaign. Maintaining this competitive standard through a heavily depleted roster will present a major challenge for the franchise over the winter months.

To help offset the personnel shortage, the organization has capitalized on roster exceptions to secure reinforcements. The franchise signed free agent guard Ochai Agbaji, utilizing a hardship roster exception that maintains flexibility regarding the league's salary cap structure.

The acquisition of Agbaji provides an extra perimeter option for a depleted rotation. Management will continue monitoring the fitness of the remaining squad members while evaluating potential further adjustments to navigate the testing injury crisis.
