Kadeena Cox sets world record to win C4 1km gold at Para-cycling Worlds

Great Britain's Kadeena Cox delivered a sensational performance at the Para-cycling Track World Championships in the Netherlands, setting a new world record to secure the C4 1km gold medal on Friday. The 35-year-old crossed the finishing line in a remarkable time of 1 minute 9.545 seconds to capture her seventh career world title.

Cox faced an anxious wait in the hot seat as Australian competitor Tara Neyland took to the track in pursuit of a podium finish, but the challenger ultimately failed to eclipse the blistering benchmark set by the British cyclist. Following confirmation of her victory, the five-time Paralympic gold medallist was draped in a Union flag by her jubilant teammates to celebrate her first world crown since 2024.

The triumph added another glittering achievement to an already legendary multisport career that has seen Cox excel at the highest international level. Known for her remarkable versatility and resilience, the British star demonstrated once again why she remains one of the most dominant competitors in para-sports history.

The championship event in the Netherlands continued to yield significant success for the British delegation across multiple classifications and disciplines on the track. James Ball successfully defended his crown in the men's tandem B 1km time-trial alongside new partner Aaron Pope to deliver another golden moment for the squad.

Ball and Pope dominated proceedings in their final, stopping the clock at an impressive 59.563 seconds to secure top honours. The victory marked the eighth world title of Ball's career, while it represented a memorable maiden global gold medal for his compatriot and pilot Pope.

In the women's pursuit final, British duo Sophie Unwin and Jenny Holl captured a hard-earned silver medal after an exceptional battle with New Zealand's Emma Foy and Jessie Hodges. The British pair had earlier signaled their intent by setting a blistering new world record of 4:30.262 during the qualification rounds.

However, the New Zealand combination raised their performance level further in the gold medal ride-off, eclipsing the previous mark with a winning time of 4:29.672 to secure the world title. Despite missing out on the top step of the podium, Unwin and Holl underlined their status among the world's elite pursuit riders.

Further success arrived in the men's events as Archie Atkinson claimed a well-deserved bronze medal in the C4 final. His compatriot Fin Graham added to the British medal tally by securing another bronze in the fiercely contested C3 1km time-trial.

The strong collective showing by the British cycling squad reinforces their preparations and ongoing dominance on the international para-cycling circuit. Athletes will now look ahead to upcoming rounds and future international fixtures as the international calendar progresses through the autumn season.
