Philippines praise homegrown talents following FIFA U15 World Cup debut

The Philippine Under-15 Men’s National Football Team completed a promising campaign at the inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, finishing 110th out of 189 participating nations. Composed primarily of homegrown talents, the young squad made a strong impression on the global stage by recording four victories and a draw across 10 matches while scoring 19 goals.

The young Nationals began their group-stage campaign with victories over Belize, 1-0, and Curaçao, 8-1, before securing further wins against Macau, 2-0, and Aruba, 5-2, during the classification round. They also played out a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe during the tournament, which brought together FIFA member associations from around the world.

Philippine Football Federation President John Anthony Gutierrez praised the team's performance, highlighting the capability of locally developed players when provided with international opportunities. Gutierrez said that the squad's display demonstrated that homegrown players could compete effectively against opponents from other continents when given a proper platform.

The squad drew its players largely from regional football associations, schools, and local clubs, with several members having previously participated in the PFF U16 National Championship held in Bago City in May. Gutierrez noted that the tournament served as an important test of the country's grassroots development program and its capacity to produce players for higher levels of competition.

Highlighting the physical and mental demands of the schedule, Gutierrez commended the players for handling unfamiliar opposition and a packed match schedule. He remarked that the group stage acted as a vital test for local talents, praising the team's resilience after facing five matches in three days without backing down against strong international rivals.

The tournament also utilized an eight-a-side format, which the Philippine Football Federation has actively promoted domestically through partnerships with the Department of Education. Gutierrez explained that this format provides young players with increased ball touches, more decision-making opportunities, and higher scoring chances, aligning with grassroots initiatives introduced in local youth leagues and the Palarong Pambansa.

Concluding his remarks, Gutierrez thanked the players, head coach Roxy Dorlas, the coaching staff, families, and supporters for delivering a memorable campaign. The federation aims to use the tournament experience as a stepping stone to build a sustainable system that produces world-class youth athletes for future international competitions alongside heritage talents based abroad.
