India elect to bowl against New Zealand in first ODI as Kohli and Rohit return

India won the toss and elected to bowl first against New Zealand in the opening match of the five-match ODI series at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday. Indian captain Shubman Gill opted to chase under overcast skies as the visitors prepare for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup.

Veteran batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to the 50-over format for the Men in Blue, having last featured during the home series against the West Indies. The touring side enters the contest following a 3-2 victory in the preceding T20I series.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner confirmed that his side was forced into a late change after opening batsman Devon Conway suffered a head knock during training. Tim Seifert was drafted into the starting lineup to open the batting alongside Will Young in Conway's absence.

Gill explained that the decision to field first was influenced by the overhead conditions and the potential for target setting in a rain-reduced encounter. The Indian skipper also noted that the New Zealand pitches offer valuable preparation ahead of the global tournament in South Africa.

The hosts enter the series without several frontline players, including Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra, while Conway sits out the opener. Santner stated that squad rotation has become a necessity given the packed international cricket calendar.

India have handed opportunities to a pace-heavy attack featuring four fast bowlers alongside all-rounders Axar Patel and Naman Dhir. Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh make up the fast-bowling contingent for the visitors.

New Zealand hold fond memories of their most recent 50-over encounters against India, having claimed a 2-1 series victory earlier in the year. However, India hold aspirations of improving their recent record in the country, where their last bilateral ODI series success arrived in February 2019.

The five-match series was originally scheduled as a shorter rubber before being extended following a request from New Zealand Cricket. Both teams view the extended contest as a crucial stepping stone in their preparations for the 2027 World Cup cycle.
