ICC launches criiio Day to celebrate one million grassroots cricket players

The International Cricket Council has announced the launch of criiio Day, an annual global celebration of grassroots cricket taking place on November 1 to mark the entry-level programme reaching one million players worldwide. Designed to introduce the sport to new audiences through a free curriculum available in 18 languages, criiio operates on the core principle that cricket can be played anytime, anywhere, and by anyone. Since its inception in 2021, the initiative has expanded rapidly, uniting the international cricket community and helping to drive the sport's global growth across multiple continents.

The milestone one millionth player to join the initiative is thirteen-year-old Saidat Hamzat from Lagos State, Nigeria, who was introduced to the sport through a local criiio Festival at her school. Reflecting on her journey, Saidat said that cricket has given her purpose, discipline, and joy while changing her life for the better. Her mother also noted the positive transformation, expressing hope that her daughter might one day represent the Nigeria national cricket team on the international stage as the programme continues to unearth new talent.

Marking Saidat's milestone entry, the inaugural criiio Day provides ICC members worldwide with the opportunity to share inspiring stories and encourage the next generation to pick up a bat and ball. ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta praised the impact of the initiative over its five-year existence. Gupta said that the programme demonstrates the power of play to unite communities and change lives while keeping fun and discovery at its core, noting that universal access remains vital as the sport prepares for its return to the Olympic Games at LA28.

To ensure global accessibility, the ICC has collaborated with its Official Global Logistics Partner, DP World, which played a key role in distributing approximately 5,000 cricket sets through the programme. The initiative has achieved a remarkable fifty-fifty gender split among its one million participants, supported by certified trainers across all twelve ICC Full Members and active delivery by sixty-five Associate Members worldwide. Regional adaptations have proven immensely successful, with Tanzania transforming the curriculum into the Swahili-language Chanzo Cricket programme, which has led the Tanzanian government to make cricket a priority sport across all 3,542 secondary schools.

The grassroots movement has also taken root in diverse environments across the globe, with sessions held on padel courts beneath the Tokyo Skytree in Japan, across the vast steppes of Mongolia, and through migrant children's programs in Chile. Africa leads all continents with over 400,000 criiio players, while Brazil stands out as a leading single nation with nearly 200,000 participants, and Bhutan has surpassed the milestone of 100,000 players. Early success stories are already emerging, with Argentina's Luna Olivera and Nigeria's Chisom Mary Okpe progressing from community sessions to national youth selection. Olivera discovered the sport through the Cricket Sin Fronteras programme before earning a spot in Argentina's under-nineteen team in 2026, while Okpe advanced rapidly to national contention following a school session in 2025.

The specific date of November first was chosen for criiio Day as a direct nod to the three letter i characters in the program's branding, which symbolize the stumps and bails making up a cricket wicket. The inaugural celebration is being driven by a global digital campaign, with cricket federations and members encouraged to share their community stories across social media channels. As the sport looks ahead to future international competitions and Olympic integration, the ICC aims to leverage the expanded delivery of grassroots programs to introduce millions more children to the game in the coming years.
