England arrive in Perth to begin preparation for Australia white-ball series

Brendon McCullum's squad landed in Western Australia ahead of an eight-match limited-overs tour starting next week.

England arrive in Perth to begin preparation for Australia white-ball series

England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum has challenged his squad to build on their recent experiences in Pakistan as they arrived in Perth on Monday for an upcoming limited-overs tour of Australia. The touring party touched down ahead of a demanding schedule comprising three one-day internationals and five Twenty20 internationals against their arch-rivals, with the opening fixture slated for 13 November at the Perth Stadium.

The tour marks England's return to Australian shores for the first time since their challenging Test campaign earlier in the year, though team management is firmly focused on white-ball development. The upcoming fixtures form a crucial part of the side's long-term planning leading towards the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia late next year.

Reflecting on the tour, McCullum expressed enthusiasm about testing his players in demanding conditions against formidable opponents. He noted that the touring itinerary offers an ideal platform to evaluate tactical methods and maintain competitive momentum ahead of the global showcase. "Firstly, it's nice to be back," McCullum said. "An Australia tour is always a great tour. The cricket's always pretty competitive. We'll play at some great stadiums, against a good side, and continue to test our methods, towards the one-day World Cup."

The white-ball coach emphasized the physical demands of international cricket, confirming that the touring party intends to incorporate intensive conditioning periods alongside match preparations. "We want to play a high-octane, robust style of play, which demands fitness elements to it," McCullum added. "So for us, this is a great opportunity to have a little fitness block in and around the demand of this series."

England head into the Australian leg following a mixed campaign during their recent ODI tri-series in Pakistan, where they secured a single victory and missed out on a place in the final. Despite the ultimate result, the matches provided valuable exposure for an evolving squad featuring several younger players experiencing subcontinental conditions for the first time. Captain Harry Brook and opening batter Ben Duckett showed encouraging form with the bat, while bowlers Liam Dawson, Sonny Baker and Jamie Overton delivered impactful spells during the four-match tournament.

Addressing the lessons learned from the Pakistan fixtures, McCullum acknowledged the overall disappointment of missing the final while highlighting the developmental benefits of high-pressure tournament cricket. He pointed out that the relatively inexperienced nature of the current squad makes exposure to varied tactical scenarios essential for future growth. "Yeah, it was disappointing," McCullum said. "Obviously, it was great to play in the tri-series. With the view towards the World Cup, the ability to be able to bounce between games, and different tactics, and different oppositions was good."

The touring squad features a blend of established international stars and promising uncapped talent. Harry Brook continues to captain both the ODI and T20I setups, supported by senior figures including Joe Root, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer and Sam Curran. The selection committee has also included rising performers such as Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox, Tom Banton and fast bowler Josh Tongue across the respective squads.

The limited-overs tour begins with the opening ODI in Perth on 13 November, followed by the second match in Adelaide on 15 November and the final fifty-over fixture in Hobart on 18 November. The action then shifts to the shortest format, with the five-match T20I series commencing in Melbourne on 21 November before concluding in Canberra on 2 December.
