Mercedes driver George Russell has confirmed his intention to accept a grid penalty during the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix. The move is designed to allow the team to install an upgraded power unit element into his car later this season.
The decision follows a challenging period for the British driver, who started at the back of the grid in the recent Singapore Grand Prix. That penalty was necessitated by an engine issue that forced his retirement during the previous race in Malaysia.
Russell, who currently trails his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli by 102 points in the Drivers' Championship, is effectively out of title contention with only six rounds of the 2026 season remaining.
Initially, the team had planned to introduce the new power unit at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. However, the schedule has been adjusted, with the upgrade now expected to be fitted during the Las Vegas race weekend on November 20-22.
The upgrade is part of an opportunity granted to Mercedes by the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system. This mechanism allows teams to improve engine performance based on their current standing in the championship relative to rivals.
The implementation of this system has sparked debate within the paddock. Red Bull, the reigning Constructors' Championship leaders, have questioned the necessity of the upgrade, arguing that Mercedes already possesses a highly competitive power unit.
Explaining the strategic shift, Russell told Sky Sports F1 that the team is now choosing to take the penalty at a circuit where overtaking is more feasible. He noted that the timing will likely be later in the season, specifically targeting Las Vegas.
The 2026 season has seen a significant shift in form for Mercedes. While Russell entered the campaign as a championship favourite, he has struggled to match the consistency of his team-mate Antonelli, who has secured eight victories compared to Russell's three.
Mercedes introduced a new upgrade package in Malaysia, but the team failed to see the immediate performance gains they had anticipated. Consequently, they opted to run different car configurations for their drivers during the Singapore weekend.
Reflecting on the team's recent struggles, Russell stated that the primary goal remains improving the car's performance. He acknowledged that Red Bull has made significant strides, dominating the last two race weekends in Malaysia and Singapore.
Max Verstappen has been a dominant force in recent outings, topping every competitive session during the Sprint weekend in Singapore. Despite leading the Sprint race at one stage, Russell was forced to retire after a crash.
Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the championship, finished on the podium in Singapore after executing late overtakes on Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. He finished 25 seconds behind the eventual race winner, Max Verstappen.
Antonelli admitted that the team has faced difficulties adapting to the new aerodynamic package. He noted that the car's behaviour is significantly different from the previous iteration, requiring the team to find a more effective operating window.
Despite these challenges, the Italian driver remains optimistic about the team's trajectory. He stated that the team is beginning to understand the complexities of the new aero package and is committed to pushing for further improvements.
Antonelli emphasised the importance of his role in helping the team refine the current car. He believes that the data gathered from the ongoing development will be crucial in shaping the design philosophy for future Mercedes challengers.
The Formula 1 calendar now moves to the Americas for a demanding triple-header. The series resumes with the United States Grand Prix in Austin, scheduled to take place between October 23 and 25.
As the season enters its final stages, the focus for Mercedes will be on extracting maximum performance from their latest upgrades. The team aims to regain the competitive edge they enjoyed during the earlier parts of the 2026 season.
Russell’s upcoming penalty in Las Vegas will be a critical moment for his campaign. By strategically choosing the venue, the team hopes to mitigate the impact of the grid drop while testing the new power unit components.
The battle between Mercedes and Red Bull continues to be a focal point of the season. With the championship standings tightening, every technical decision and performance gain will be vital for the remaining races.
Fans can follow all the action from the upcoming United States Grand Prix live on Sky Sports F1. The event marks the start of a crucial stretch of races that will conclude the 2026 Formula 1 season.
