Sri Lanka crush Pakistan to secure tri-series final spot

Dilshan Madushanka claimed a career-best five-wicket haul as Sri Lanka eliminated England from the tri-series with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Pakistan.

Sri Lanka crush Pakistan to secure tri-series final spot

Sri Lanka secured their place in the final of the ongoing one-day international tri-series after a commanding eight-wicket victory over Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday. The result officially ended England's hopes of reaching the tournament decider.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Sri Lanka’s bowlers dismantled the Pakistan batting order. The hosts were skittled for just 110 runs, a total that proved insufficient to challenge the visitors on a pitch that offered significant assistance to the seamers.

Dilshan Madushanka was the standout performer for Sri Lanka, delivering a devastating spell of fast bowling. He claimed a career-best five wickets for 34 runs, consistently troubling the Pakistani batters and ensuring the innings collapsed within 30 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka chased down the target with clinical efficiency. They reached their goal of 111 in just 18.5 overs, losing only two wickets in the process to complete the victory with more than 31 overs to spare.

Kamindu Mendis led the chase with an unbeaten 62 off 60 deliveries. His innings was marked by aggressive strokeplay, including eight fours and two sixes, which effectively neutralized any lingering threat from the Pakistan bowling attack.

Mendis’s innings was not without fortune, as he was dropped by wicketkeeper Saad Baig before scoring. He also successfully overturned an on-field lbw decision while on 44, eventually reaching his half-century with a powerful pull shot for six.

The defeat marks a rare setback for Pakistan in the tournament, though they had already secured their spot in the final prior to this match. Their qualification was bolstered by two previous victories over England, including a narrow one-wicket win on Sunday.

Pakistan also defeated Sri Lanka in the opening fixture of the tri-series by 37 runs. Despite this latest loss, the team remains the primary challenger for the title, with the final scheduled to take place this coming Saturday.

England, meanwhile, find themselves eliminated from contention following this result. The team had struggled to find consistency throughout the series, failing to secure the necessary points to overtake the top two sides in the standings.

The tournament will conclude its group stage with a final fixture between England and Sri Lanka on Thursday. With both teams’ fates already decided, the match is now considered a dead rubber, though it offers a final opportunity for pride.

The Gaddafi Stadium has provided a challenging environment for batters throughout the tournament, with pace bowlers finding success early in the innings. Sri Lanka’s ability to exploit these conditions was the defining factor in their victory.

Pakistan will now look to regroup before the final on Saturday. The team management will likely review their batting approach, which faltered significantly against the disciplined line and length maintained by the Sri Lankan pace attack.

For Sri Lanka, the victory represents a significant turnaround in form. After losing their opening match against Pakistan, they have demonstrated resilience and tactical improvement, culminating in this comprehensive performance in Lahore.

The performance of Madushanka has been a highlight for the Sri Lankan camp. His ability to take early wickets and maintain pressure throughout his spell has been instrumental in the team's recent success in the tri-series format.

As the tournament heads towards its conclusion, the focus shifts to the final showdown. Pakistan will be eager to avenge their heavy defeat and reclaim momentum, while Sri Lanka will look to maintain their winning streak to lift the trophy.
