Como produced a historic display in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, defeating Lens 9-1 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. The result marks the largest winning margin for an away team in the history of the modern competition.
Anastasios Douvikas led the scoring for the visitors with a hat-trick, while Nico Paz, Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina, and debutant Matteo Papaccioli also found the net. Ruben Aguilar scored the lone goal for the hosts.
The victory sees Como equal the record for the largest winning margin in the modern Champions League era, matching the eight-goal gap previously achieved by Liverpool and Real Madrid. It is also only the second time a team has scored nine goals in a single match since the competition's 1992 rebranding.
Como head coach Cesc Fabregas praised his team's performance but urged caution as the club continues its debut campaign in Europe's elite competition. The Italian side has now secured three wins in four league phase matches.
The visitors dominated from the outset, with Douvikas opening the scoring in the seventh minute. By half-time, Como held a 3-0 lead, and they continued to press their advantage throughout the second half against a struggling Lens side.
The result leaves Como in fourth place in the overall Champions League standings with nine points. They currently sit three points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, and one point adrift of Arsenal as they push for a knockout stage spot.
This defeat represents a significant setback for Lens, marking their third consecutive loss in the competition. For Como, the performance builds on earlier home victories against RB Leipzig and Manchester United, cementing their status as a surprise package this season.
