India beat New Zealand by five wickets as Kohli hits 74

Virat Kohli struck a brilliant 74 to guide India to a comfortable five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first one-day international at Auckland's Eden Park on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander displayed sublime form on a bouncy surface, hitting 13 boundaries and a maximum to help the tourists take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Set a revised target of 143 runs in 32 overs following multiple rain interruptions, India reached 143-5 in 22.4 overs with 56 balls remaining. New Zealand had earlier been bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs after losing the toss and being asked to bat first on a green pitch.

India elected to field first under overcast skies, and their inexperienced pace attack immediately troubled the home batters with bounce and movement. Arshdeep Singh led the charge with figures of 4-70 from his 10 overs, supported by debutant Gurnoor Brar, who claimed 3-44 in 9.2 overs. Anshul Kamboj also maintained disciplined line and length, taking 2-22 in his full quota of 10 overs to restrict the Black Caps.

New Zealand struggled to build meaningful partnerships against the relentless visiting attack. Tim Seifert, stepping in after Devon Conway was ruled out due to concussion, top-scored for the hosts with 38 runs off a pull shot that found mid-on. Glenn Phillips contributed 30 and Daryl Mitchell added 28, while Blair Tickner provided late resistance with an unbeaten 34 from 23 deliveries at the tail end of the innings.

In response, India suffered an early setback when opening batsman Rohit Sharma departed for a six-ball duck in the first over. That brought Kohli to the crease ahead of his 38th birthday, and the senior batter immediately seized control of the contest. He combined with captain Shubman Gill for a crucial 113-run partnership for the second wicket to steady the innings.

Gill played a disciplined supporting role with 37 runs from 56 deliveries before being dismissed. Rain delays repeatedly paused the momentum of the chase, leaving India with a reduced target under the Duckworth-Lewis method. However, Kohli remained completely unperturbed by the interruptions, unleashing a flurry of cover drives, pulls, and fluent wrist-work against the home pace bowlers.

Jacob Duffy was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with three wickets, but the total proved entirely insufficient to defend against India's aggressive batting approach. Kohli was eventually dismissed after a 51-ball masterclass that left the bowling attack thoroughly subdued. The second match of the five-game series is scheduled to take place in Wellington on Saturday.
