Seattle Seahawks rule out quarterback Sam Darnold for Week 9 with quadriceps injury

Drew Lock is in line to make his second start of the season against the Arizona Cardinals.

Seattle Seahawks rule out quarterback Sam Darnold for Week 9 with quadriceps injury

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will miss Sunday's NFC West clash against the Arizona Cardinals after sustaining a quadriceps injury during the team's Week 8 defeat. Head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed the setback on Wednesday, ruling his starting signal-caller out for the upcoming fixture.

Darnold picked up the quad issue late in the fourth quarter during Monday night's 34-17 loss to the Chicago Bears. Macdonald revealed that the veteran quarterback also played through a cracked rib sustained on the second play of that same encounter, demonstrating significant durability under intense pressure.

The Seahawks coaching staff has designated Darnold's recovery as week-to-week, though the organization elected against placing him on the injured reserve list. Macdonald expressed confidence that the quarterback would return to the lineup sooner rather than later following further evaluation and rehabilitation.

With Darnold sidelined, backup quarterback Drew Lock is expected to take the helm against Arizona. Lock has completed 35 of 48 pass attempts this season for 422 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions across limited appearances in relief roles.

Lock is managing a minor elbow issue of his own, which will require careful management through the practice sessions leading up to kickoff. Macdonald noted that the team intends to monitor Lock's throwing workload during the week while preparing third-string rookie Jalen Milroe for potential action.

Lock previously filled in effectively during the opening month of the campaign when Darnold dealt with a soft-tissue injury. In his sole previous start of the season, Lock led the Seahawks to a 31-7 victory over the Cardinals in Arizona, completing 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns.

The supporting cast includes playmaker Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who remains a central figure in the Seattle passing game after a prolific outing earlier in the year against the same divisional opponents. The offensive unit aims to recapture that rhythm to rebound from their recent stumble against Chicago.

Seattle enters the Week 9 matchup holding a 4-4 record as they navigate a crucial stretch of the regular season schedule. Maintaining offensive consistency remains a primary objective for the coaching staff as they adjust their personnel strategy for the divisional road trip.

The Arizona Cardinals present a formidable challenge after shaking up their own roster dynamics in recent weeks. Divisional fixtures traditionally carry significant weight in the NFC West standings, intensifying the stakes for both organizations as the mid-point of the campaign approaches.

Preparations will continue through the remainder of the week at the Seahawks training facility, with medical staff closely tracking both Lock's throwing arm and Darnold's rehabilitation progress. Further clarity regarding the active matchday roster will emerge when the final injury designations are released ahead of Sunday's kickoff.
