Coleraine stage dramatic comeback to defeat champions Larne

Coleraine recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over Larne at Inver Park in a high-stakes Irish League encounter.

Coleraine stage dramatic comeback to defeat champions Larne

Coleraine produced a stunning second-half performance on Friday night to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat reigning Irish League champions Larne 3-2 at Inver Park. The result marks a significant moment in the current league campaign.

The visitors were initially outplayed by the hosts, who established a commanding lead through a brace from James Simpson. However, Coleraine responded with a clinical display of attacking football to turn the match around in a 21-minute period.

Joel Cooper proved to be the match-winner for the Bannsiders, netting the decisive goal with nine minutes of normal time remaining. His strike completed a remarkable turnaround after Coleraine had trailed by two goals at the interval.

The comeback began when Cooper scored just after the hour mark, capitalising on a delivery from Ben Doherty. Matthew Shevlin then levelled the score with a powerful header nine minutes later, shifting the momentum firmly in favour of the visitors.

The victory extends Coleraine’s lead at the top of the table, moving them six points clear of Linfield. Although Linfield holds two games in hand, the win provides a substantial boost to Coleraine’s title credentials this season.

Larne, who have won three of the last four league titles, suffered their first defeat of the domestic season. The loss leaves them 11 points behind Coleraine, albeit with four games in hand due to their earlier European commitments.

Coleraine manager Ruaidhri Higgins expressed immense pride in his squad’s resilience following the final whistle. He highlighted the team's refusal to drop their heads after falling behind as the most pleasing aspect of the performance.

"The manner of the victory is the most pleasing thing," Higgins told BBC Sport NI. "When the second goal went in and we're away to the champions, did we let our heads drop? We didn't. We actually grew from strength to strength."

Match-winner Joel Cooper described the result as a significant statement for the club. He praised the squad’s collective spirit and their ability to maintain composure under pressure at one of the league’s most difficult venues.

"We have a never-say-die attitude in the changing room, and we believe we have quality and a team that score goals," Cooper stated. "Not many teams come here and get three points, so it's always nice."

Larne assistant manager Gary Haveron was left frustrated by his side’s defensive collapse. He described the team's performance in the second half as "pathetic" after they surrendered a comfortable lead on their home turf.

Haveron remained dismissive of the idea that the result was a definitive statement from Coleraine. He noted that there is still a significant portion of the season remaining and further meetings between the two clubs to come.

"We've still got to play them down there," Haveron said. "We drew the first one, they've won this one. There's still a lot of games for us to play against them, and there's lots of football between now and the end of the season."

The defeat compounds a difficult week for Larne, who were also eliminated from the County Antrim Shield by Championship side Dundela on penalties. The club will look to recover quickly when they host Linfield on Tuesday.

Coleraine’s transformation under new ownership and a full-time professional model has been a major talking point in the Irish League this season. Their rise has established them as genuine contenders to challenge the established powers.

The Bannsiders have demonstrated consistent form throughout the opening stages of the campaign. This victory at Inver Park serves as further evidence of their ability to compete at the highest level of the domestic game.

Prior to this encounter, Larne had conceded only three goals in their opening seven league matches. Coleraine’s attacking trio of Cooper, Shevlin, and Doherty effectively dismantled that defensive record during their second-half surge.

The match was widely regarded as a contender for the game of the season, showcasing the intensity and quality currently present in the Irish League. Both sides demonstrated their attacking intent throughout the contest.

Coleraine will look to maintain their positive momentum when they return to action on 24 October. They are scheduled to face a challenging away fixture against a revitalised Crusaders side at Seaview.

For Larne, the upcoming match against Linfield represents an immediate opportunity to rectify their recent form. The fixture is expected to be a crucial test for both teams as they aim to keep pace with the league leaders.
