Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2 as Muriqi heads late winner in Champions League

Fenerbahce secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening, ending the English side's 100 percent record in the competition after a thrilling encounter in Istanbul. Andoni Iraola's side twice took the lead during the match, but defensive lapses allowed the Turkish club to mount a remarkable comeback and claim all three points at the Chobani Stadium Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Sports Complex.

Substitute Vedat Muriqi headed home the decisive goal in the 80th minute to seal the win for Fenerbahce, who are managed by former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt. The defeat leaves Liverpool with three wins from four matches in the league phase of Europe's premier club competition, halting their momentum following a difficult week that also included a domestic defeat against Arsenal.

The visitors made a promising start to the fixture and broke the deadlock in the 25th minute through nineteen-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni. The teenager produced a superb first-time volley from the edge of the penalty area that deflected past the goalkeeper to register his first senior goal for the club.

That advantage proved short-lived, however, as Fenerbahce equalised just four minutes later through Mason Greenwood. The former Manchester United forward scored from a set-piece when his strike took a decisive deflection off Jérôme Jacquet to wrong-foot Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and level the score at 1-1.

Liverpool regained the initiative in the second half when substitute Alexander Isak found the net in the 69th minute. Introduced with half an hour remaining, the forward made an immediate impact by converting from close range to restore the visitors' lead.

Once again, though, the English side failed to protect their advantage for long. Just four minutes after going ahead, Liverpool conceded another equaliser when Nathan Brown tapped home at the far post following defensive confusion involving Alisson and Cody Gakpo.

The late equaliser set up a frantic finale as both teams searched for a winner. Fenerbahce capitalised on their momentum in the 80th minute when Muriqi rose to power a header past Alisson from a looping delivery into the penalty area, completing the comeback and sending the home supporters into raptures.

Analysing the decisive moment on live television coverage, pundit Ally McCoist questioned the positioning of the Liverpool goalkeeper. He expressed surprise that Alisson failed to come off his line to claim the high cross before Muriqi made contact with his header.

The result delivered a significant blow to Liverpool's aspirations of moving level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Champions League standings. Iraola's team will now need to address their defensive frailties ahead of their upcoming fixtures as they look to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
