Diana Shnaider beats Leylah Fernandez to win Pan Pacific Open title

Diana Shnaider secured her first title of the season by defeating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the Pan Pacific Open final on Sunday. The 22-year-old triumphed in a hard-fought encounter lasting two hours and 18 minutes at the WTA 500 tournament.

Shnaider looked to be cruising towards victory after taking the opening set and racing to a 4-0 lead in the second. However, Fernandez mounted a resilient comeback, fighting back to claim the second set 7-5 and force a deciding set.

The Russian player regained her composure in the decider, breaking away to seal the victory and claim the sixth WTA singles title of her career. The triumph also lifts Shnaider back up to a career-high ranking of 11th in the world.

Following the match, an emotional Fernandez fought back tears during the trophy presentation as she dedicated her efforts to a recently deceased family member. The Canadian player paid tribute to her grandfather, known as Lolo, thanking her family back home for their support despite receiving difficult news on the day of the match.

Fernandez said, "And lastly I just want to thank my family who are back home. We had some bad news today but thank you so much for all the support, all the messages, it really means a lot. And Lolo, I know you are looking down on us so thank you for always being strong and supporting us."

Despite the defeat, the run to the final moves Fernandez up to 19th in the rankings following back-to-back finals in Ningbo and Tokyo. The Canadian showed immense character throughout the week in Asia before falling just short in the championship match against a determined opponent.

Shnaider expressed her gratitude to her support system after capturing her maiden title of the 2026 campaign. The young champion thanked her coach Sascha Bajin and her family watching from home for helping her achieve this significant milestone in her professional career.

Speaking during the trophy ceremony, Shnaider said, "Firstly, I would like to congratulate Leylah on an amazing week, last week, some great achievements through this Asia Swing. Congrats to you, your coach, and your family back home."

Shnaider added, "I also want to say thanks to and congratulate my coach, who is here with me to achieve our first title this season. It means definitely a lot, so definitely a great achievement and a great finish to the season."

Fernandez reciprocated the sportsmanship during her runner-up speech, offering congratulations to the champion and her coaching staff. The former US Open finalist also acknowledged the hard work of the tournament organisers and the dedication of the fans in Tokyo.

Fernandez said during her address, "First of all I would like to congratulate Diana. An amazing week, a great match. Congratulations to you and your team. Hopefully we can have many more battles like this one."

The Canadian player made sure to highlight the contributions of her own coach, Eric Hechtman, who has traveled with her through the demanding Asian swing. Fernandez thanked him for his continuous guidance during the tournament.

Fernandez said, "Second, I would like to thank my coach Eric, who is here. Thank you so much for being here this week and last. We just got to keep going. I want to thank my team who are back home watching."

The week in Japan marked another strong tournament for Fernandez, who has enjoyed a productive run of form across recent weeks. Her ability to reach consecutive finals highlights her consistency at the highest level of the women's professional tour.

Shnaider's victory adds to her growing resume on the WTA tour, taking her career title tally to six. The upward trajectory in the rankings reflects her strong performances on hard courts throughout the year. Both players will now look ahead to the remaining events and the conclusion of the tennis season.
