USA Swimming names 38-athlete roster for SC World Championships

USA Swimming has officially announced a 38-athlete roster, including wild cards, for the upcoming 2026 Short Course World Championships in Beijing following the conclusion of the national trials. The squad features a potent mix of established global stars, Olympic champions, and eighteen competitors preparing to make their senior international debuts for the United States on the world stage.

The American women's contingent has been capped at sixteen athletes after standout performers Claire Weinstein and Torri Huske declined their invitations. Weinstein chose to prioritize ongoing training and recovery following a bout of meningitis over the summer months, while Huske's decision allowed Phoebe Bacon to move into a priority position on the team after initially finishing third in the one hundred metres individual medley.

Claire Curzan headlines the women's entries following an exceptional trials campaign that saw her break both a world record in the one hundred backstroke and an American record in the two hundred backstroke. She is set to contest four different events in the Chinese capital, bringing immense versatility and medal potential to the American team as they prepare for the global competition.

Other notable names on the women's roster include Kate Douglass and Gretchen Walsh, both of whom delivered phenomenal performances at the previous World Championships. Their inclusion ensures that the United States will remain formidable across multiple disciplines, particularly in the highly competitive sprint and stroke events where American depth is traditionally unmatched by rival nations.

On the men's side, the squad is capped at twenty athletes following a dramatic final night of competition at the trials. Noah Cakir, Maximus Williamson, and Owen McDonald all secured their roster spots during the closing sessions, edging out competitors like Johnny Crush and Matt King who ultimately missed selection for the trip to Beijing.

Caeleb Dressel highlights the men's selections, marking his first international appearance for the United States since competing at the Paris Olympic Games. Dressel's return adds vital experience and leadership to a men's group that also features newly minted world record holders Van Mathias and Jack Alexy, who are expected to pose major threats in both individual races and relays.

Ilya Kharun is also set to make his official debut for Team USA at the championships, adding further dynamism to the butterfly events. In addition to the standard qualifiers, USA Swimming confirmed that Luke Barr and Anna Peplowski earned wild card selections, meaning their positions do not count against the official roster limits established for the tournament.

A significant feature of the announced delegation is the inclusion of eighteen debutants ready to represent the country at a senior global championship. The new wave of talent includes female competitors Liberty Clark, Rylee Erisman, Katie McCarthy, Isabelle Odgers, Skyler Smith, and Camille Spink, who have all earned their breakthrough opportunities through consistent domestic performances.

The male debutants joining them in Beijing comprise Luke Barr, Brian Benzing, Josh Bey, Finn Brooks, Noah Cakir, Adam Chaney, Ryan Erisman, Grant House, Van Mathias, Owen McDonald, Tyler Ray, and Maximus Williamson. This influx of fresh international competitors highlights the ongoing regeneration within the American swimming structure following the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic cycle.

The selection process involved rigorous trials designed to test athletes across various short-course disciplines, creating intense competition for the limited spots available. Observers and analysts have noted the extraordinary depth present in several domestic events, particularly in women's backstroke where competition for places remains fierce and promises further high-level duels in upcoming international windows.

With the roster now finalized, attention turns to the logistical preparations and training camps ahead of the trip to Beijing. The team will aim to assert dominance across the relay events and individual classifications, building on historical American success at short-course global showcases while testing new tactical combinations in the pool.
