Chelsea beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 as pressure mounts on Carrick

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces an increasingly uncertain future after his side suffered a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The result extended United's winless streak in all competitions to nine matches.

Morgan Rogers opened the scoring five minutes into the second half before Cole Palmer doubled the lead from the penalty spot. The visitors were reduced to 10 men when defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card.

United have now collected only seven points from their opening nine Premier League matches, leaving them just one point above the relegation zone. The club hierarchy is expected to face significant pressure regarding Carrick's position following the latest setback.

The match began with an end-to-end rhythm as both sides created opportunities. United captain Bruno Fernandes, returning to the starting lineup, missed a chance to score, while Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders made several saves to keep the visitors at bay.

United briefly thought they had taken the lead through Matheus Cunha, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Chelsea also saw an early goal from Estevao disallowed by the officials during a lively first half.

The deadlock was broken shortly after the interval when Rogers dribbled through the United defence and finished expertly over goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in favour of the hosts as they dominated possession.

Martinez's afternoon ended prematurely after he was penalised for a challenge on Wesley Fofana. Following a VAR review, the referee issued a second yellow card to the Argentine defender and awarded Chelsea a penalty for the incident.

Palmer stepped up to take the spot-kick and, despite Lammens getting both hands to the ball, it trickled into the net off the post. The goal effectively ended any hopes of a United comeback in the final stages.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso fielded one of the youngest starting XIs in the club's recent Premier League history. The victory provided a much-needed boost for the Blues, who had lost their previous two league fixtures.

United's struggles were compounded by the lack of clinical finishing in the final third. Bryan Mbeumo came close to scoring a late consolation goal, but his powerful effort was tipped onto the crossbar by Penders.

The defeat marks a significant low point for the club, which has not endured a 10-match winless run since the 1977-78 season. The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge reflected the growing frustration among the travelling supporters.

Carrick, who had been given additional time to improve results following a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth last week, now faces a critical period. The club's leadership must decide on his future before the upcoming European fixture.

United are scheduled to host Roma in a crucial Champions League encounter on Tuesday. Having lost two of their opening three matches in the competition, the team is under pressure to secure a result to avoid an early exit.

Brief scores: Chelsea 2 (Rogers 50', Palmer 65' pen) beat Manchester United 0.
