Wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan has publicly addressed the criticism he faced following Pakistan's early exit from the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Azam expressed frustration over being singled out for the team's poor performance despite his limited involvement in the tournament.
Azam featured in only one match during the campaign, which took place in Dallas on 6 June 2024 against the United States. He was dismissed for a golden duck in that fixture and did not play in the subsequent group games against India, Canada, or Ireland.
The batter questioned the focus on his personal fitness, arguing that the criticism was misplaced given the team's broader struggles. He specifically pointed to the match against India in New York, where Pakistan failed to chase a target of 120 runs, finishing on 113 for 7.
Azam stated that it was unfair to make him the face of the team's failure when other players who were considered fit also failed to deliver results on the field. He suggested that the narrative surrounding his fitness was used as a convenient distraction from the team's collective shortcomings.
Pakistan's campaign in the 2024 tournament was marked by a shock defeat to the United States and a narrow six-run loss to India. The team's exit was ultimately confirmed after rain forced the abandonment of the match between the United States and Ireland.
The 2024 T20 World Cup performance remains a significant point of discussion in Pakistan cricket circles as the team continues to navigate changes in personnel and strategy. Azam, the son of former Pakistan captain Moin Khan, remains a prominent figure in the domestic and international setup.
