Liverpool owner FSG holds talks over buying majority stake in Cadillac F1 team

Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Premier League club Liverpool and Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, has engaged in discussions regarding the acquisition of a majority stake in the Cadillac Formula One team. The prospective transaction is valued at more than £2bn, as current co-owner Mark Walter weighs the divestment of various sporting assets amidst ongoing regulatory investigations in the United States.

Cadillac entered the Formula One grid earlier this year as a collaborative enterprise between automotive giant General Motors and Walter's investment vehicle, TWG Global. While TWG has stated that an immediate sale of the team is not imminent, discussions have taken place with several prospective investors, including Fenway Sports Group, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Mark Walter is currently facing inquiries by the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission concerning the management of funds across his insurance entities, including Delaware Life, Clear Spring, and EquiTrust. Representatives for TWG Global have strenuously denied any wrongdoing, stating that no fraud has occurred.

As part of a broader restructuring of its sporting portfolio, TWG Global previously relinquished its controlling interest in the NBA franchise Los Angeles Lakers and a 13 percentage stake in Chelsea during the summer months. The investment group is also exploring a potential sale of the WNBA side Los Angeles Sparks, though Walter has maintained that his controlling ownership of MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers will remain unaffected.

For Fenway Sports Group, a move into Formula One would represent a significant expansion into motor sport, where it already maintains a 50 percent shareholding in the NASCAR outfit RFK Racing. The group's leadership has reportedly been drawn to Formula One by the championship's substantial commercial expansion over the past decade, particularly within the United States market, alongside rising television broadcast revenues.

The global motorsport series has experienced significant financial growth since Liberty Media acquired its commercial rights in 2017, with annual revenues having more than doubled to reach approximately $4bn. Despite this booming economic landscape, Cadillac's debut campaign on the track has proved challenging, with the team currently positioned at the foot of the constructors' championship standings without a point.

The potential investment by Fenway Sports Group follows its own recent corporate adjustments, which included selling a 38 percent stake in Liverpool during the summer to a consortium featuring prominent technology entrepreneurs. That agreement includes provisions for a potential full acquisition of the Merseyside club before August 2027, leaving Fenway Sports Group with capital to explore new ventures after initially purchasing the English club for £300m in 2010.

Representatives for Fenway Sports Group declined to comment regarding its prospective investment plans or the status of the discussions. The precise equity breakdown between General Motors and TWG Global within the Cadillac operation has not been made publicly available as the team navigates its inaugural season in the elite single-seater championship.
