Pakistan head coach Nolberto Solano has set a semi-final spot as the team's immediate target ahead of their SAFF Championship campaign.

Pakistan coach Nolberto Solano targets semi-finals at SAFF Championship 2026

Pakistan men’s national football team head coach Nolberto Solano has expressed firm confidence in his squad ahead of the upcoming SAFF Championship 2026, setting qualification for the semi-finals as the team’s immediate objective. Speaking at a press conference held at a local hotel in Islamabad on Monday evening, the head coach stressed the importance of collective effort, physical fitness, and long-term player development as the national side prepares for the regional tournament.

Pakistan have been drawn in a competitive group alongside arch-rivals India and Maldives, with Solano making it clear that every single match must be approached with ultimate focus. He outlined a step-by-step strategy for the tournament, treating each group fixture with the intensity and seriousness of a final.

The opening challenge for the Green Shirts will come against India on Thursday, a fixture that carries immense emotional and sporting significance for supporters across both countries. Solano drew a direct parallel between the Pakistan-India rivalry and the famously intense South American football fixture between Peru and Chile, acknowledging the heavy expectations and the special motivation it gives the players.

Following their highly anticipated clash against India, Pakistan will turn their attention directly to their second group fixture against Maldives. The head coach reiterated that securing positive results in both encounters is essential if the team is to successfully navigate the group stage and advance to the last four of the competition.

Addressing the composition of his squad, Solano confirmed that Pakistan will initially be without their diaspora-based players for the opening phase of the tournament. Because the competition falls outside the official FIFA international match window, overseas-based talent is unavailable, leaving the coaching staff to rely entirely on domestic players.

Despite the absence of overseas players, the former international midfielder insisted that this situation would not be used as an excuse by the coaching staff. He voiced strong backing for the local talent pool currently available within the country, maintaining a belief in the ability of the domestic players to step up on the international stage.

Solano noted that the national team’s selection doors remain permanently open to any player who demonstrates the requisite ability and the correct mental attitude. He explained that the technical staff is slowly and methodically building a deeper talent pool through continued observation of domestic competitions across the country.

Reflecting on tactical preparations and defensive organisation, Solano emphasized that the team must first establish defensive solidity against opponents. He pointed out that the squad's strongest overall players are currently found within the defensive department, making tactical discipline a vital cornerstone of their approach.

The head coach highlighted valuable lessons learned from past international outings, specifically recalling a heavy defeat during the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia. Pakistan suffered a 4-0 loss against Thailand during that campaign, an experience that underlined the critical need for absolute concentration throughout the entire ninety minutes of a match.

Solano warned his squad that a single moment of lost concentration at the international level can prove extremely expensive, reinforcing the need for sustained physical and mental effort. He added that the team's formation will remain flexible throughout the tournament, adapting dynamically depending on the specific opponent and the personnel available for selection.

Shifting focus to the structural challenges facing the sport domestically, Solano stressed the wider need for stronger domestic structures to elevate the overall standard of Pakistani football. Drawing from the developmental experiences of his native Peru, he explained that young players require structured club environments to properly reach their full athletic potential.

The head coach welcomed the highly encouraging prospect of Pakistan launching a professional football league starting next year. He described the upcoming professional structure as a monumental step forward for player preparation, noting that the country's current generation of players has historically lacked formal pre-season training camps.

Solano explained that pre-season periods are widely recognized as the most crucial phase of a player's annual schedule, setting the physical foundation required to endure an entire competitive season. He expressed optimism that the new professional league will soon provide Pakistani footballers with those vital preparatory windows, enabling them to build the stamina needed for high-level competition.

The ongoing national camp and the upcoming matches in the regional tournament form part of a broader push by the Pakistan Football Federation to prioritise youth development and structured pathways. With preparations now finalized in Islamabad, the national squad prepares to depart for the tournament with high ambitions.

As the team looks ahead to Thursday's opening fixture against India, the players and coaching staff remain fully focused on executing their tactical game plan. Securing a strong start against their neighbours will provide the ideal platform as Pakistan chase their ultimate target of reaching the knockout stages of the regional championship.
