Namibia made history on Sunday by clinching their first bilateral ODI series victory against a Full Member nation, defeating Ireland by five wickets in the decisive fifth match in Windhoek. The result secured a 3-2 series win for the hosts, providing a significant boost to their preparations for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.
Ireland were dismissed for just 129 in 33.1 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat, with Namibia’s pace attack proving too difficult to handle. Namibia chased down the target in 21.2 overs, finishing on 131-5 to seal the series in front of their home crowd.
JJ Smit was the standout performer for the home side, claiming 4-20 from his nine overs to dismantle the Irish batting lineup. Jack Brassell provided excellent support, taking three wickets as only four Ireland players managed to reach double figures during the innings.
Jordan Neill top-scored for the visitors with 33 off 25 balls, but the innings lacked stability after early wickets fell. The tone was set in the second over when Tim Tector was dismissed, and the side never fully recovered from the pressure applied by the Namibian bowlers.
In response, Namibia opener Louren Steenkamp laid a solid foundation with 44 runs off 44 balls. Despite a brief middle-order wobble that saw Matthew Humphreys claim two wickets, captain Gerhard Erasmus steered the chase with a composed 30, ensuring his side crossed the line with plenty of overs to spare.
Erasmus was named Player of the Series for his consistent contributions, having amassed 263 runs and taken four wickets throughout the five-match contest. Smit earned the Player of the Match award for his match-winning spell in the final game.
Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker expressed his disappointment following the defeat but acknowledged the value of the experience. "We came here today excited about the opportunities with the series on the line, but I don't think we quite rocked up from a skills perspective," he said. "Credit to Namibia, they played diligent cricket and did that for longer periods of time than us."
The series served as vital preparation for both sides ahead of the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. While Ireland have already secured their place at the upcoming World Cup Qualifier based on their ODI rankings, Namibia are expected to compete via the World Cup Qualifier Play-off.
Brief scores: Ireland 129 (33.1 overs; J Neill 33; JJ Smit 4-20, J Brassell 3-25) lost to Namibia 131-5 (21.2 overs; L Steenkamp 44, G Erasmus 30; M Humphreys 2-48) by five wickets.
