Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills after sustaining a right thumb injury on the team's opening offensive play. The two-time NFL MVP, who was making his first start since October 4, exited the field immediately following an incomplete pass attempt to Zay Flowers.
The incident occurred when Jackson faced defensive pressure and his throwing hand struck a defender's arm during his follow-through. Jackson, who had been sidelined for three weeks with a high ankle sprain, jogged to the locker room for medical evaluation and was officially ruled out by the team shortly thereafter.
Following Jackson's departure, backup quarterback Tyler Huntley entered the contest to lead the Baltimore offense. Huntley later sustained a toe injury during the second quarter, forcing the Ravens to turn to their third-string quarterback, rookie Joe Fagnano, for his first career NFL appearance.
The loss of Jackson is a significant blow for the Ravens, who have struggled offensively in his absence. Baltimore recorded a 1-2 record and averaged 17.7 points per game during the three-week stretch he missed, compared to a 3-1 start and an average of 29.8 points when the quarterback was active.
Jackson's availability for the upcoming schedule remains uncertain. With the Ravens slated to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night in Week 9, the short turnaround presents a challenge for the quarterback's recovery from a thumb injury, which directly impacts his ability to grip the football.
The Ravens entered the Week 8 matchup looking to regain momentum after a difficult month. Jackson’s return was highly anticipated as a key boost for the team's playoff aspirations, but his early exit has left the Baltimore coaching staff managing a depleted quarterback room against a strong Buffalo defense.
