Colts face crucial trade deadline decisions on star players

Indianapolis could trade veterans like Jonathan Taylor and DeForest Buckner if results do not improve before November 10.

Colts face crucial trade deadline decisions on star players

The Indianapolis Colts are facing a pivotal juncture ahead of the NFL trade deadline following the recent firing of general manager Chris Ballard. League sources indicate that rival franchises are closely monitoring the Indianapolis roster for potential trade opportunities as the November 10 deadline approaches.

The immediate future of the franchise hinges on the next three games against the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys. New chief of personnel Ed Dodds, working alongside owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon and the front office, will evaluate whether to push for a playoff berth or pivot toward a roster rebuild.

Star running back Jonathan Taylor has emerged as a primary name drawing interest from several quarterback-needing contenders. The Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos are among the teams expected to ponder trade possibilities for the 27-year-old playmaker.

Taylor is currently playing under a contract extension signed just prior to the start of the season. His salary structure includes the remainder of a nearly $7 million base salary for this year, followed by $16 million next season and almost $18 million in 2028.

Despite robust external interest, league sources note that Irsay-Gordon views Taylor as a foundational pillar for any future Indianapolis rebuild. Acquiring the former college standout would likely require a significant package involving premium draft capital from interested suitors.

Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner represents another prime candidate should the Indianapolis hierarchy opt to sell. The 32-year-old veteran is playing at a high level and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027, making him an attractive target for playoff contenders.

The San Francisco 49ers are considered one potential suitor for Buckner, having previously employed him from 2016 through 2019. San Francisco traded Buckner to the Indianapolis franchise in March 2020 in exchange for the 13th overall selection in that year's draft.

Buckner has already collected a $10 million roster bonus this season alongside the remainder of his $13 million base salary. Given his contract status, a decision by Indianapolis to transition into seller mode would almost certainly trigger his departure.

Offensive guard Quenton Nelson is also generating considerable attention across the league as he enters the final year of his contract. Widely regarded as one of the premier guards in professional football, Nelson is 30 years old and has previously expressed a desire for a long-term extension.

Although Ballard was unable to finalize a lucrative multi-year agreement that would have compensated Nelson at the top of his position, multiple playoff-caliber teams are monitoring his situation. Finding elite interior offensive line help is notoriously difficult during the active season.

Defensive tackle Grover Stewart is another experienced contributor whose name is circulating in trade discussions. At 33 years old, the unheralded run-stopper is playing in the final year of a contract that pays him a base salary of nearly $11.8 million.

Stewart has long been recognized within football circles as an underappreciated anchor on the interior defensive line. A move to a contending franchise could provide the veteran lineman with a prominent platform during the final stretch of his current deal.

Veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen rounds out the group of Indianapolis players operating on expiring contracts. Contending teams searching for reliable pass-catching depth are expected to evaluate Allen's availability as the deadline draws nearer.

The appetite for mid-season trades has increased noticeably across the NFL landscape in recent seasons. League data shows an average of 17 trades executed between October 1 and the trade deadline annually since 2022, with 18 deals completed in each of the past two years.

Beyond the Indianapolis roster, other notable names continue to surface in ongoing trade speculation. Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. remains a frequent subject of rumors during his second professional campaign, though the organization has not signaled an intent to deal him.

The Cleveland Browns have also drawn attention while sitting atop the AFC North division with a 4-2 record. Front offices across the league continue to assess their assets as the competitive landscape solidifies toward the middle of the autumn schedule.

The Indianapolis leadership group faces a delicate balancing act over the next fortnight. Retaining veteran talent to pursue a postseason berth must be weighed against the long-term benefits of accumulating valuable draft resources for future development.

As evaluations continue behind closed doors, the performance of the team in upcoming fixtures will dictate the final direction. The coming weeks will determine whether Indianapolis reinforces its current core or initiates a comprehensive roster transformation.

Evaluating potential trade packages requires careful coordination between ownership and the personnel department. Ed Dodds will steer these complex discussions while balancing short-term competitive aspirations against long-term financial flexibility for the franchise.

Rival general managers across the league continue preparing offers should the Indianapolis hierarchy officially signal a fire sale. The outcome of upcoming matches against Minnesota, Jacksonville and Dallas will ultimately settle the strategic path chosen by the front office.
