Rays select Nick Martinez for World Series Game 1 start against Brewers

Manager Kevin Cash has opted for Nick Martinez over staff ace Drew Rasmussen to open the World Series in Milwaukee on Friday.

Rays select Nick Martinez for World Series Game 1 start against Brewers

The Tampa Bay Rays have announced a strategic shift for the opening game of the World Series, naming Nick Martinez as their starting pitcher against the Milwaukee Brewers. Manager Kevin Cash confirmed the decision on Thursday, opting to provide staff ace Drew Rasmussen with additional recovery time.

Rasmussen, who has been a cornerstone of the Rays' pitching rotation throughout the postseason, was eligible to start on regular rest following his appearance in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians. However, the coaching staff prioritised his long-term health.

Cash explained that the heavy workload placed on Rasmussen during the playoffs necessitated the adjustment. The right-hander has consistently delivered deep outings, logging at least six innings in each of his postseason starts while conceding only three runs across 21 total innings.

The manager noted the club's reliance on Rasmussen, stating, "He's had a pretty thick workload here. We've relied on him heavily. We know when he takes the ball, we're trying to get the full-pitch allotment out of him."

Nick Martinez, 36, will take the mound for his second career postseason start. He enters the contest on five days' rest, having delivered a strong performance in Game 4 of the ALCS, where he limited the Guardians to one run over 5.1 innings.

Martinez expressed his readiness for the high-stakes assignment. "It's exciting. I think as a team, as a staff, we're confident in whoever we call up to the mound. It fell on me, and my job is just to rack up as many outs as we can."

The veteran right-hander has enjoyed a career-best season after signing a one-year, $13 million contract with Tampa Bay just before spring training. Despite a difficult start in the Grapefruit League, he established himself as a premier arm in the American League.

Martinez concluded the regular season with a 3.10 ERA over a career-high 180 innings, earning his first All-Star selection. He demonstrated particular effectiveness on the road, where he maintained a 2.38 ERA across 16 starts throughout the campaign.

His familiarity with the venue adds an interesting dimension to the matchup. Martinez previously pitched at American Family Field in late March, holding the Brewers to two runs over six innings during an early-season series between the two clubs.

The upcoming World Series opener will see Martinez face off against Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski. Both teams enter the series as low-payroll organisations that secured the best records in their respective leagues, setting the stage for a competitive encounter.

Reflecting on the challenge posed by the Brewers, Martinez highlighted their relentless approach at the plate. "They're a team that doesn't take any pitches off. They're always fighting every pitch. They never give up. It's going to be a dogfight."

The decision to start Martinez reflects the Rays' depth and their calculated approach to managing a pitching staff that has been tested by a demanding postseason schedule. The team remains focused on securing their first World Series title.

As the series begins, all eyes will be on how the Rays' rotation handles the Brewers' lineup. With Rasmussen held back for a later game, the onus falls on Martinez to set the tone for the visiting side in Milwaukee.

The Brewers, meanwhile, are preparing for a historic series, with both franchises seeking to claim their first-ever World Series championship. The atmosphere in Milwaukee is expected to be intense as the two teams finally meet on the biggest stage.

The Rays' path to the World Series involved overcoming the Cleveland Guardians in a hard-fought ALCS. Their ability to rely on multiple starters has been a hallmark of their success, a trend they hope will continue in this final series.

Martinez has become a key figure in the clubhouse, even taking on the role of organising team dinners during road trips. This camaraderie is something the team believes will serve them well as they navigate the pressure of the World Series.

The series opener marks the culmination of months of preparation for both clubs. For Martinez, it represents the pinnacle of a season that saw him transform from a spring training uncertainty into a vital component of a championship-contending rotation.

Fans and analysts alike are anticipating a tactical battle, with both managers likely to utilise their bullpens aggressively. The choice of starting pitchers will be scrutinised as the series progresses and the stakes continue to rise.

With the first pitch scheduled for Friday, the focus shifts entirely to the diamond. The Rays believe their decision to start Martinez provides them with the best opportunity to secure a crucial victory in the opening game.

As the two teams prepare to face off, the narrative of the 'small-ball' World Series continues to dominate discussions. Both the Rays and the Brewers have defied expectations to reach this point, and the upcoming games promise to be highly competitive.
