Atlanta Dream provide private suite for Enes Kanter Freedom at WNBA Finals

The Atlanta Dream and State Farm Arena management arranged for former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom to view Wednesday night’s Game 3 of the WNBA Finals from a private luxury suite. The decision was made following reports of security concerns regarding his attendance at the match between the Dream and the Golden State Valkyries.

In an official statement, State Farm Arena confirmed that Freedom had reached out to federal, state, and local authorities, as well as league and team officials, to voice worries about his personal safety. The arena emphasized that the security of all guests remains their primary objective.

The statement noted that after consultations with the WNBA, team ownership, and security personnel, the decision was reached to move Freedom to a private suite. This location was designated to ensure a secure environment for him and other attendees, with additional security measures and a state police officer assigned to his location.

Freedom had previously announced his intention to attend the game via social media on Monday. In a post on X, he claimed that arena security had prevented him from accessing his originally purchased seats, suggesting he was being escorted from the general seating area.

The Atlanta Dream and State Farm Arena have not provided confirmation regarding whether Freedom attempted to sit in his original seats before the move to the suite. The former NBA player has been a vocal presence at various sporting events recently, often drawing attention for his public commentary.

Freedom’s attendance at the WNBA Finals follows a prior incident in late August. During a game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever, he was ejected from the arena and subsequently banned after a heated verbal interaction with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.

The former player stated that his motivation for attending the Game 3 matchup in Atlanta was sparked by comments made by Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams. Williams had publicly expressed support for the inclusion of transgender athletes in the sport.

In his social media post, Freedom claimed that Williams’ remarks provided him with motivation to declare his intention to enter the WNBA draft. He and former NBA player Royce White have both publicly stated that they identify as women, though their eligibility remains a point of contention.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has consistently maintained that the league’s current regulations do not permit their participation. The league’s stance is that only individuals who meet specific eligibility criteria regarding gender identity are permitted to play in the WNBA.

Freedom shared a copy of a letter from Commissioner Engelbert addressed to U.S. Representative Marlin A. Stutzman. In the correspondence, Engelbert clarified the league’s position, stating that the individuals cited in the inquiry were not eligible to compete in the professional league.

The WNBA Finals series between the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries continues to draw significant attention. The league has navigated various discussions regarding its policies and the growth of the sport throughout the 2026 season.

State Farm Arena remains a focal point for the conclusion of the season. Security protocols are standard for high-profile events, and the arena continues to host the final stages of the championship series as the teams compete for the title.

The situation surrounding Freedom’s presence at the arena highlights the intersection of public discourse and professional sports management. Both the WNBA and the Atlanta Dream have prioritised the maintenance of order during the high-stakes environment of the Finals.

As the series progresses, the focus remains on the competitive performance of the teams on the court. The Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream are currently engaged in a closely contested series to determine the 2026 WNBA champion.

The WNBA has seen significant growth in recent years, with increased viewership and media coverage. Managing the logistics of major events, including security for high-profile attendees, is part of the league’s operational framework during the championship period.

Further updates regarding the WNBA Finals and the league's ongoing administrative matters are expected as the season concludes. The league continues to focus on its competitive schedule and the crowning of a new champion.

The involvement of state police and private security at the venue underscores the seriousness with which the arena treated the potential for disruption. The arrangements were intended to balance the rights of attendees with the necessity of maintaining a safe environment.

Freedom’s public declarations regarding the WNBA draft have been met with clear responses from league leadership. The commissioner’s office has reiterated its position on eligibility, citing the governing rules of the professional organization.

The Atlanta Dream will continue to host the remaining games of the series as scheduled. The organization has not issued further comments regarding the specific security measures beyond the initial statement provided by the arena.

The 2026 WNBA season is approaching its conclusion, with the Finals serving as the climax of the year. Fans and stakeholders are focused on the final results as the league looks toward the upcoming offseason.
