Burnley's prolonged search for a home league victory will extend beyond the one-year mark following a 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Turf Moor on Friday evening. The result leaves the Clarets without a win on their own ground in 21 league matches.
The last time Burnley secured a home league win was on 18 October 2025, when they defeated Leeds United 2-0. Since that fixture, the club has endured a difficult run, suffering 11 defeats and recording 10 draws in front of their own supporters.
This sequence currently stands as the longest winless home run across the top four tiers of English football. Despite an encouraging start to the match, individual defensive lapses proved costly for Nicky Hayen’s side as they fell to their fifth league defeat this season.
Jamie Vardy provided a bright moment for the hosts, marking his return to English football with a goal. The 39-year-old striker found the net in the first half, registering his first goal in the country since May 2025.
Vardy’s strike was his first since his final appearance for Leicester City, where he reached the milestone of 200 goals for the club. Despite his contribution, Burnley were unable to maintain their advantage as the game progressed.
The momentum shifted following a defensive error by Kyle Walker, who lost possession just outside the penalty area. Wolverhampton Wanderers capitalised on the mistake, with Sean Neave squaring the ball for Fer Lopez to finish via the post.
In the second half, Burnley struggled to regain control of the contest. The decisive moment arrived with 18 minutes remaining when a heavy touch from Igor allowed Tawanda Chirewa to strike towards the goal.
Although Burnley goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert managed to get a hand to the ball, his effort was insufficient. The ball looped over the goalkeeper and into the net, securing the victory for the visiting side.
Following the final whistle, the Burnley squad was met with audible dissatisfaction from the home crowd. The defeat leaves the club in a precarious position as they continue to search for a solution to their home form.
Burnley manager Nicky Hayen expressed his frustration regarding the nature of the goals conceded. He noted that while the team’s organisation was effective in the first half, individual errors ultimately dictated the outcome of the match.
"A difficult defeat. The first half was actually really good in terms of the organisation," Hayen told Sky Sports. "Then we give two goals away. You can talk about match plans and tactics, but if we concede two goals like this, it's difficult to win games."
Addressing the ongoing winless streak at Turf Moor, Hayen emphasised the need for a psychological shift. He acknowledged that while the past record is a frequent topic of discussion, the focus must remain on changing the current mindset.
"They apologised in the dressing room and I accepted it because no one does it on purpose, but it doesn't help us, that's for sure," Hayen added. "We just have to change the mindset because it will change one day."
For Wolverhampton Wanderers, the victory represents a significant return to form. The result marks their first win in three matches and sees them climb to sixth place in the Sky Bet Championship standings.
Wolves manager Cesar Peixoto praised his team’s resilience and tactical discipline. He highlighted the squad's collective effort, noting that the majority of the players involved had featured in each of the team's last three fixtures.
"I'm happy with the performance. I think we deserved to win," Peixoto stated after the match. "We struggled with the press in the first 30 minutes, but after that we managed the game well and created plenty of chances."
Peixoto credited the win to the mentality of his players throughout the 90 minutes. He suggested that the ability to adapt after a challenging opening period was the primary difference between the two sides on the night.
"The difference today was our mentality. This was a victory for the whole group and the entire team," Peixoto added. "It's an important win, but it's only three points."
Burnley will now look to regroup as they attempt to break their home hoodoo in upcoming fixtures. The club remains under pressure to secure points and climb the table after a challenging start to their campaign.
Wolverhampton Wanderers will look to build on this momentum as they continue their push in the Championship. The win provides a timely boost for the squad as they move into the next phase of the season.
