David Miller missed out on Test debut in Pakistan due to late injury

South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad has revealed that veteran white-ball specialist David Miller was on the verge of making his long-awaited Test debut during the team's tour of Pakistan in 2025 before an untimely injury dashed his hopes.

Miller, who has established himself as one of South Africa's most prominent limited-overs cricketers, has never represented the Proteas in the longest format of the game despite his extensive international experience. Conrad disclosed that the middle-order batter was specifically lined up to play in Pakistan to counter the spin threat posed by veteran slow-bowling all-rounder Noman Ali.

Speaking on a podcast, the head coach explained his selection strategy for subcontinental tours, emphasizing the strategic importance of left-handed batters against quality spin bowling in conditions found in Pakistan and India. Conrad noted that he believed a properly balanced left-handed core gave the team the best chance of neutralizing threats such as Noman and India's Ravindra Jadeja.

According to the coach, everything was in place for Miller to travel and earn his first Test cap in Pakistani conditions. However, a sudden injury struck the player shortly before the series commenced, preventing him from joining the squad and leaving him deeply disappointed.

The left-hander made his international debut for South Africa in May 2010 during a limited-overs tour against the West Indies, featuring in both a T20I and an ODI within the space of three days. Over the course of his career, he has played 180 ODIs, accumulating 4,762 runs at an average of 42.90, alongside eight centuries and 24 half-centuries.

In the shortest international format, Miller has appeared in 140 T20Is, scoring 2,804 runs at an average of 33.78 with a strike rate of 141.40, including two centuries. His ability to finish innings under pressure has made him a fixture of South Africa's white-ball squads for well over a decade.

Prior to stepping away from the long form of the game, Miller played 63 first-class matches, scoring 3,342 runs at an average of 36.32 with six centuries and 19 half-centuries. In September 2018, he officially made himself unavailable for first-class cricket in order to extend his career by focusing exclusively on limited-overs formats and international white-ball commitments.
