Philadelphia Flyers host Ottawa Senators seeking first win of NHL season

The struggling Flyers look to avoid a historic double-digit losing streak as they face the in-form Senators on Saturday night.

Philadelphia Flyers host Ottawa Senators seeking first win of NHL season

The Philadelphia Flyers enter Saturday night's fixture against the Ottawa Senators desperate to secure their first victory of the 2026-27 National Hockey League campaign. Winless through their opening nine games, the hosts are currently carrying a troubling 0-6-3 record and face the looming prospect of an unwanted piece of history.

Saturday's matchup at the Xfinity Mobile Arena presents a daunting challenge for a Philadelphia squad that has struggled immensely on the offensive side of the ice. Head coach Rick Tocchet's team is searching for answers after enduring an anemic start to the season that has left them near the bottom of the league standings.

Conversely, the Ottawa Senators arrive in Philadelphia riding a wave of early-season success under head coach Travis Green. Despite dealing with significant injury issues throughout their roster, the Senators have managed to construct an impressive 6-2-0 record to sit near the summit of the Atlantic Division.

The two divisional rivals have already crossed paths once earlier in the campaign, with Ottawa narrowly edging past Philadelphia in a tight 2-1 contest last Thursday. That previous encounter proved costly for the visitors, who lost talented forward William Eklund to a severe lower-body injury.

It was subsequently confirmed that Eklund will face an extended spell on the sidelines, sidelining the forward for roughly 10 to 12 weeks following successful ankle surgery. The long-term absence of the $16.8 million forward is a major blow to Ottawa's forward depth as the autumn schedule intensifies.

Philadelphia has injury concerns of their own to navigate ahead of the weekend clash. Forward Travis Konecny picked up an ailment during last week's meeting between the two sides, though he managed to bravely play through the pain barrier and finish the contest.

The Flyers' defensive corps remains depleted with players such as Rasmus Ristolainen and Cam York sidelined pending further medical evaluations from the club. These ongoing absences have severely tested the organizational depth available to the Philadelphia coaching staff during the opening weeks of the season.

Ottawa has similarly been forced to dig deep into their reserves to cope with early injuries, having already deployed a league-high 10 different defensemen this season. Despite those personnel hurdles, the Senators' defensive structure has held firm thanks to strong contributions from the blueline group.

Goaltending has also been a major bright spot for the visiting side, with Linus Ullmark putting together a stellar run of form. The experienced netminder has matched historic milestones following previous stints with the Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres.

The projected forward combinations for Philadelphia feature Trevor Zegras centering the top line alongside Sean Couturier and Owen Tippett. Denver Barkey joins Christian Dvorak and Tyson Foerster on the second unit, while Matvei Michkov skates alongside Porter Martone and Noah Cates.

The Flyers' fourth line features Michael Bunting, Jack Studnicka, and Noel Acciari as coach Tocchet looks to spark some life into his forward groups. On defence, Travis Sanheim is expected to pair with Oliver Bonk, followed by Nick Seeler alongside Jamie Drysdale, and Simon Benoit with David Jiricek.

Ottawa's attacking lines are projected to feature Tim Stutzle centering Drake Batherson and Stephen Halliday. Dylan Cozens anchors a line with Claude Giroux and Andre Burakovsky, while Shane Pinto pivots between Nick Cousins and Michael Amadio.

The Senators' bottom six features Ridly Greig centering Warren Foegele and Fabian Zetterlund. On the blue line, Thomas Chabot pairs with the returning Artem Zub, supported by pairings of Tyler Kleven with Carter Yakemchuk, and Cameron Crotty with Jordan Spence.

Special teams performance has heavily favored the visitors heading into Saturday's encounter. Philadelphia's power play has struggled immensely, converting on just two of 26 opportunities for a league-worst 7.7 percent success rate, while their penalty kill operates at 82.9 percent.

Ottawa's special teams units show marginal improvements, with their power play sitting at 13.5 percent after scoring five goals on 37 attempts. The Senators' penalty kill unit has successfully neutralized 80.6 percent of opponent power plays through their first seven fixtures.

Individual scrutiny will heavily fall upon Philadelphia defenseman Jamie Drysdale during Saturday's game. The 24-year-old blueliner has endured a surprisingly quiet start to the season, recording zero points across his first nine appearances despite logging heavy average ice time of over 22 minutes per night.

Drysdale has registered just nine shots on goal so far, a stark contrast to his career-best campaign last year where he contributed eight goals from 101 shots. The coaching staff has encouraged their defenders to jump into the offensive rush more frequently, a tactic highlighted by recent contributions from Sanheim and Bonk.

The Philadelphia organization underwent a massive roster overhaul and cultural shift over recent seasons, transitioning into a younger core. Promising young Russian winger Matvei Michkov remains one of the few untouchables in trade speculation as the front office evaluates potential long-term pieces.

Over the summer, the Ottawa Senators made the headline-grabbing decision to trade their former captain and emotional leader Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. Many analysts predicted the franchise would struggle to remain competitive in the talent-rich Atlantic Division following that departure.

Instead, the Senators have defied expectations with their resilient start to the 2026-27 campaign, establishing themselves as early playoff contenders. Saturday's broadcast will be available locally on NBC Sports Philadelphia, TVAS-D, and Sportsnet 1 as the puck drops at 7 p.m.
