Ottis Gibson backs Ali Raza and Mohammad Basit for international cricket

Peshawar Zalmi head coach Ottis Gibson has praised the potential of young fast bowlers Ali Raza and Mohammad Basit, tipping them for future international success.

Ottis Gibson backs Ali Raza and Mohammad Basit for international cricket

Peshawar Zalmi head coach Ottis Gibson has expressed strong confidence in the development of young Pakistani fast bowlers Ali Raza and Mohammad Basit. The experienced coach believes both players possess the talent required to represent Pakistan at the highest level.

Gibson highlighted the immense potential of the duo, noting that they have a very high ceiling in terms of their career development. His comments come as the young quicks continue to navigate the early stages of their professional journeys.

During the most recent edition of the Pakistan Super League, both bowlers delivered impressive performances. Ali Raza claimed 10 wickets in five matches at an average of 16.80, while Mohammad Basit also secured 10 wickets across six appearances at an average of 17.20.

Reflecting on their capabilities, Gibson stated that the pair has shown significant promise during their time in the franchise setup. He emphasized that their current trajectory suggests they are capable of making the step up to international cricket in time.

Since the conclusion of the Pakistan Super League, the two bowlers have followed different paths in domestic cricket. Raza has remained active, featuring in the National Champions Cup and transitioning into first-class cricket for the Ghani side.

In the National Champions Cup, a 50-over domestic competition, Raza took one wicket in three matches. The 18-year-old has since moved into the President’s Trophy Grade-I, where he has claimed two wickets in two matches for his team.

Basit has seen less competitive action since the conclusion of the franchise tournament earlier this year. Despite the lack of recent match practice, his performance in the Pakistan Super League remains a key indicator of his raw pace and potential.

Neither Raza nor Basit were selected for Pakistan’s recent T20I series against Sri Lanka. They were also omitted from the squad currently participating in the ODI tri-series involving Sri Lanka and England, which is being led by Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The current Pakistan ODI squad features a mix of established stars and emerging talent, including Abrar Ahmed, Arafat Minhas, and Babar Azam. The selectors continue to monitor domestic performances as they look to build depth in the fast-bowling department.

Gibson’s endorsement underscores the importance of nurturing young talent within the domestic structure. As the Pakistan Cricket Board continues to evaluate its options, the progress of prospects like Raza and Basit will remain a point of interest.

The development of young fast bowlers is a traditional strength of Pakistan cricket. Coaches like Gibson play a vital role in refining the skills of these players, ensuring they are prepared for the physical and mental demands of international cricket.

For now, both bowlers will focus on gaining more experience in the domestic circuit. Consistent performances in first-class and List-A cricket will be essential for them to force their way into the national selection committee's future plans.

The ongoing ODI tri-series serves as a platform for current squad members to cement their places in the national side. Meanwhile, the domestic season continues to provide opportunities for rising stars to showcase their growth and readiness for higher levels.

As the season progresses, the performance of young pace bowlers across all formats will be closely tracked by fans and selectors alike. The investment in these prospects is seen as crucial for maintaining Pakistan's competitive edge in world cricket.

The focus remains on the current international commitments, but the long-term vision includes integrating high-potential players into the senior setup. Gibson’s assessment serves as a reminder of the depth of talent currently emerging within the domestic system.
