Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket as Australia all-rounder ends career

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down the curtain on a dynamic career spanning more than a decade. The 38-year-old, popularly known as 'The Big Show', had already stepped away from one-day international cricket in 2025 and has now concluded his T20 international career alongside his state commitments with Victoria.

Across his extensive international career, Maxwell represented Australia in 130 T20 internationals, scoring 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97 and a remarkable strike rate of 154.42. In addition to his explosive batting exploits in the shortest format, the versatile cricketer claimed 51 wickets and secured 62 catches for his country, while also playing 149 ODIs and seven Test matches.

Reflecting on his departure from the game, Maxwell admitted that bidding farewell to his domestic teammates proved to be an emotional milestone. Speaking on a podcast, he noted that informing his Victoria colleagues that his final state appearance had arrived proved significantly tougher than anticipated.

Maxwell expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities afforded to him since first entering the Victorian change rooms around 2009. He stated that accepting such a career trajectory at the outset would have been an easy choice, while highlighting his gratitude for representing his country extensively.

The hard-hitting batter posted a career-high T20 international score of 145 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016, a knock that underlined his destructive capabilities at the crease. His international resume also features vital contributions to Australia's global tournament successes, including the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup campaigns as well as the T20 World Cup triumph in 2021.

Beyond the international stage, Maxwell featured for Australia at the T20 World Cup hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka earlier this year. His aggressive style and unorthodox stroke-play consistently troubled bowling attacks around the globe and established him as one of the premier short-form players of his generation.

Maxwell also reflected fondly on receiving his maiden Test cap during a period when he felt barely prepared for the rigours of red-ball international cricket. He expressed satisfaction at repaying the selectors' faith through impactful performances whenever opportunities arose across different formats.

Looking ahead, the veteran campaigner confirmed that he will continue to feature in Twenty20 franchise leagues around the world. He remains slated to play for the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming season of the Big Bash League, ensuring supporters will still witness his explosive displays in domestic franchise fixtures.
