Dean and Forrest share lead heading into final round of Open de Espana

Joe Dean and Grant Forrest hold a one-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard after a competitive third day at the Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Dean and Forrest share lead heading into final round of Open de Espana

England's Joe Dean and Scotland's Grant Forrest are tied for the lead at 13-under par heading into the final round of the Open de Espana. The duo holds a narrow one-shot advantage over a chasing pack at the Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Forrest entered the third day with a one-shot lead but experienced a minor setback early in his round with a bogey on the fifth hole. The Scot responded well, carding birdies on the 11th, 14th, and 16th holes to finish with a four-under-par 67.

Reflecting on his performance, Forrest noted his satisfaction with his resilience throughout the day. He stated, "I didn't have my best stuff but I'm really proud of how I dug in and made some nice putts, a couple of good recovery shots."

The 32-year-old Sheffield native Joe Dean produced a dynamic 65 to join Forrest at the top. Dean, who previously worked as a delivery driver, enjoyed a strong front nine with five birdies before adding three more on the back nine.

Dean’s momentum briefly stalled with a double-bogey on the 16th and a dropped shot on the 17th. However, he finished his round on a high note by sinking a 31-foot putt for birdie on the final hole.

Regarding his late recovery, Dean commented, "It gave a little bit of hope after those previous two holes. We'll go again and see what happens." The Englishman is currently seeking his second title of the season.

Dean previously secured his maiden DP World Tour victory at the British Masters earlier this year. His current form places him in a strong position to challenge for another trophy on the European-based circuit.

Forrest, who is aiming for his third DP World Tour title, expressed his affection for the venue. He remarked, "This is one of my favourite tournaments, it's been good to me in the past, and I'd love nothing more than to go home with a trophy."

The leaderboard remains crowded behind the co-leaders, with three players sitting at 12-under par. France's Victor Perez and Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen both carded impressive rounds of 65 to move into contention alongside Switzerland's Joel Girrbach.

Girrbach maintained his steady progress with a third-round 67. The trio remains just one stroke behind the leaders, setting the stage for a tense final day of competition in the Spanish capital.

Angel Ayora currently represents the best hope for a home victory. The Spanish golfer sits three shots off the lead following a solid 66, keeping the local crowd engaged for the final round of play.

Shane Lowry also showed signs of improvement during the third round. The Irishman recorded his best score of the week with a four-under 67, though he remains eight shots off the pace in a tie for 17th place.

The Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid has provided a challenging test for the field this week. The course has seen a variety of scoring, with low numbers becoming more frequent as the tournament progresses.

Conditions on the course have allowed for aggressive play, as evidenced by the multiple rounds of 65 recorded on Saturday. Players will need to maintain that level of precision to navigate the final 18 holes successfully.

The Open de Espana continues to be a significant fixture on the DP World Tour calendar. With the top of the leaderboard so tightly packed, the final round is expected to be a closely contested affair.

Fans can follow the conclusion of the tournament live on Sunday. The broadcast coverage is scheduled to begin at 12pm, providing full insight into the battle for the title in Madrid.

As the players prepare for the final round, the focus will be on managing the pressure of the closing holes. Both Dean and Forrest have demonstrated the ability to recover from errors, a trait that will be vital on Sunday.

The tournament has historically been a platform for both established stars and emerging talent to showcase their skills. With several players within striking distance, the outcome remains highly unpredictable heading into the final day.

The final pairing of Dean and Forrest will be closely watched as they look to separate themselves from the field. Their performance will dictate the pace for the rest of the contenders chasing the title.

All eyes will be on the 18th green as the tournament reaches its climax. The winner will be determined by who can best handle the nerves and execute their game plan under the pressure of the final round.
