Austin Smotherman wins Bermuda Championship in weather-shortened playoff

Austin Smotherman claimed his second consecutive PGA Tour title by defeating Seamus Power in a Monday playoff at Port Royal.

Austin Smotherman wins Bermuda Championship in weather-shortened playoff

Austin Smotherman secured his second consecutive PGA Tour victory by defeating Seamus Power on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The tournament at Port Royal Golf Course was reduced to 54 holes after severe weather disrupted play.

Raging winds exceeding forty miles per hour battered the coastal layout in Southampton, Bermuda, rendering the course unplayable on Sunday. Tournament officials made the decision to cancel the final round and postpone the conclusion until Monday morning.

When play resumed at the start of the week, Smotherman and Power returned to settle the championship. Smotherman held his composure through the blustery conditions to edge his opponent on the third extra hole, collecting the winner's share of the purse.

The total prize fund at Port Royal Golf Course stood at six million dollars. With the tournament shortened and settled on Monday, Smotherman took home a winner's cheque worth one million and eighty thousand dollars.

The victory represents a remarkable continuation of form for Smotherman. It arrived just weeks after he secured his breakthrough PGA Tour title at the Bank of Utah Championship, transforming his career trajectory within a matter of weeks.

Smotherman waited one hundred starts on the PGA Tour to claim his maiden victory. He needed a mere fifty-seven total holes in Bermuda to double his career trophy haul and demonstrate his growing prowess in elite professional company.

The triumph adds another valuable year to Smotherman's full-time PGA Tour exempt status. His previous victory in Utah granted him job security and entry into the lucrative Championship Series, an agreement that is now extended through the 2029 season.

In addition to the financial rewards and extended exemption, the victory elevated Smotherman to fifty-first position in the FedEx Cup Fall standings. This climb places him firmly in contention to earn starts at the opening two Signature Events of 2027.

Reflecting on his remarkable autumn run, Smotherman expressed astonishment at his sudden ascent. He noted that after missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs, he viewed the fall schedule as a golden opportunity to play freely and enjoy his golf.

The American golfer explained that entering the autumn swing with low pressure yielded extraordinary results. He admitted that experiencing consecutive victories felt like a fairy tale after years of fighting through the lower professional tiers.

Smotherman's professional journey involved a patient climb through the developmental ranks. He previously competed on the circuit formerly known as PGA Tour Latinoamerica before advancing to the Korn Ferry Tour to hone his competitive edge.

He earned his initial PGA Tour card for the 2021-2022 campaign and maintained his full-time status for three consecutive seasons. However, a difficult 2024 campaign saw him slip to 169th in the standings and lose his playing privileges.

Showing impressive resilience, Smotherman bounced back by capturing two titles on the Korn Ferry Tour during the 2025 season. That stellar form enabled him to regain his card and return to the main tour for the 2026 calendar year.

Early promise during the 2026 season included a strong showing at the Cognizant Classic in March, where he nearly secured a victory. He finally broke through in Utah before doubling down with his composed performance in the windy conditions of Bermuda.

Discussing his mindset after securing another title, Smotherman emphasized the fine margins in professional golf. He suggested that winning breeds a sense of freedom and validates the meticulous processes he has developed over a decade as a professional.

While Smotherman celebrated his triumph, runner-up Seamus Power also found significant positives despite falling short of the trophy. A costly bogey on the third extra hole prevented the Irishman from claiming a second Bermuda title.

Power previously lifted the Butterfield Bermuda Championship trophy in 2022. He subsequently enjoyed consistent seasons, finishing forty-first in the FedEx Cup in 2023 and maintaining a top-sixty ranking through the following year.

However, a dip in form during the 2025 season saw him record only two top-ten finishes and six top-twenty-five results. He ultimately finished 117th in the FedEx Fall standings, which resulted in the loss of his full-time tour exemption.

Entering the 2026 season, Power was forced to navigate a restricted schedule from the lower priority categories. He admitted that the constant uncertainty regarding tournament entries created a challenging and stressful competitive environment.

Determined to regain full status for the following year, Power targeted a strong finish to the autumn swing. His runner-up performance in Bermuda propelled him up to sixty-eighth in the FedEx Fall standings, effectively securing his card for 2027.

Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the event, Power reflected on the psychological relief of securing his playing privileges. He noted that eliminating the guesswork from his schedule will allow for better preparation when the new year commences.

The strong autumn sequence, which included two top-ten finishes across three events and a near-miss in Bermuda, highlighted a major upturn in form. Power expressed satisfaction with his progress and looked ahead to moving further up the rankings.

Port Royal Golf Course has historically favored strategic play and precise ball-striking, qualities that came to the fore during the wind-swept championship. Competitors faced severe gusts that demanded total mastery of trajectory control throughout the shortened week.

Smotherman successfully managed his equipment in the difficult gusts, utilizing his iron play to navigate the coastal layout. His ability to keep the ball beneath the wind proved decisive during the crucial stages of the tournament.

The conclusion of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship marks another significant chapter in the ongoing FedEx Cup Fall series. Players continue to vie for crucial ranking points, exemptions, and opportunities ahead of the upcoming PGA Tour season.
