Pat Harper appointed as Tennessee Lady Vols tennis assistant coach

The former NCAA doubles champion and professional player returns to Knoxville to join Alison Ojeda's coaching staff.

Pat Harper appointed as Tennessee Lady Vols tennis assistant coach

The University of Tennessee women's tennis programme has announced the appointment of former men's tennis standout Pat Harper as an assistant coach. Harper returns to the Knoxville campus following a three-year stint competing on the professional tennis circuit.

Head coach Alison Ojeda confirmed the hiring on Wednesday, expressing her enthusiasm for bringing a former national champion into the fold. Ojeda highlighted Harper's deep connection to the university and his understanding of the requirements for elite performance.

"I am very excited that Pat is joining our program as a coach," Ojeda stated. "There's something special about being a Tennessee Vol, and Pat shares that same joy and commitment to excellence. He knows what it takes to be a national champion."

Harper, a native of Brisbane, Australia, enjoyed a highly successful collegiate career at Tennessee. He secured the 2021 NCAA Doubles Championship alongside partner Adam Walton and earned All-American honours in each of his final three full seasons.

During his time as a student-athlete, Harper recorded a 96-38 record in doubles competition. This tally places him 11th on the university's all-time list for doubles victories, cementing his status as one of the programme's most accomplished players.

His collegiate tenure included significant team achievements, such as four consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearances between 2019 and 2023. He was also a key contributor to the team's 2021 SEC Tournament title and two Final Four runs.

Following his graduation, Harper transitioned to the professional tour. He currently holds a world doubles ranking of No. 160, having reached a career-high ranking of No. 115 in January 2026. His professional resume includes nine doubles titles.

Among his professional achievements, Harper has secured six ATP Challenger crowns. Throughout his time on the circuit, he has competed alongside notable Tennessee alumni, including Johannus Monday and Shunsuke Mitsui, maintaining strong ties to his former teammates.

In his new role, Harper will work alongside head coach Alison Ojeda and assistant coach Martim Prata. Prata, who played alongside Harper during all five of his seasons at Tennessee, welcomed the addition of his long-time teammate to the staff.

"Pat is a true VFL who has a tremendous love and passion for Tennessee," Prata said. "Having won an SEC team championship alongside him, I know the kind of teammate, competitor, and person he is. He is a great addition."

Harper expressed his excitement regarding the transition from professional competition to the collegiate coaching ranks. He noted that the opportunity to return to "Rocky Top" was a significant factor in his decision to join the Lady Vols.

"It's a special feeling coming back to the place where I had so many great memories on and off the tennis court," Harper remarked. "Now, working with the women's team, I can share those experiences and that knowledge from the pro tour."

The appointment has been met with support from within the tennis community. Adam Walton, Harper's former doubles partner, praised his work ethic and energy, noting that he expects Harper to be a pivotal influence on the current roster.

J.B. Bowling, the Executive Associate Athletics Director at Tennessee, also lauded the hire. He described Harper as a "consummate teammate" who consistently elevated the performance of those around him during his playing days.

The Lady Vols programme, led by Ojeda, aims to leverage Harper's championship experience to continue its development. Ojeda noted that the roster aspires to reach the same heights Harper achieved during his own playing career.

Harper's return to the university marks a new chapter for both the individual and the programme. He is expected to begin his duties immediately, focusing on team culture and the technical development of the student-athletes.

The Tennessee women's tennis team continues to build its reputation within the SEC. With the addition of a former national champion to the coaching staff, the university looks to strengthen its competitiveness in upcoming seasons.

As Harper settles into his coaching role, he will focus on implementing the lessons learned from his time on the professional circuit. His goal is to assist the Lady Vols in achieving their objectives for the upcoming year.

The university remains committed to fostering an environment where student-athletes can thrive. By bringing back former standouts like Harper, the athletic department aims to maintain a strong link between its history and its future success.

Further details regarding the team's schedule and upcoming fixtures will be released by the university in due course. Harper is expected to be on the court for the start of the team's next training block.
