Russian gymnasts denied visas for World Championships in Rotterdam

The Netherlands has refused entry to three leading Russian athletes, including reigning all-around champion Angelina Melnikova, ahead of the world championships.

Russian gymnasts denied visas for World Championships in Rotterdam

The Netherlands has denied entry visas to three prominent Russian gymnasts, preventing them from competing at the upcoming World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. The decision has sparked a strong reaction from Russia's governing body, which has condemned the move as discriminatory.

Reigning women's all-around world title holder Angelina Melnikova is among the trio affected by the visa refusals. The group also includes fellow former Olympic champion Viktoria Listunova and 18-year-old Anna Kalmykova, according to the national federation.

The Russian Gymnastics Federation stated that the Embassy of the Netherlands in Moscow notified the visa centre of its refusal to issue travel documents to the three leaders of the women's national team. Consequently, these athletes have been deprived of the opportunity to participate in the global showcase.

Describing the decision as a violation of the principles of equal competition, the RGF accused Dutch authorities of deliberately attempting to keep the strongest contenders out of the tournament. The federation argues that such administrative hurdles undermine the integrity of international sporting events.

In response to the developments, Russian sports minister Mikhail Degtyaryov announced that officials would ask the International Olympic Committee and World Gymnastics to strip the upcoming competition of its status as a qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The week-long world championships are scheduled to run from October 17 to October 25 in Rotterdam. While three athletes were refused entry, Russian media reports indicate that four other members of the gymnastics delegation were successfully granted visas to enter the country.

This is not the first time Melnikova has faced travel complications ahead of a major international competition. In August, she was initially denied a visa to compete at the European Championships in Croatia before the decision was successfully reversed on appeal.

Following that successful appeal in Croatia, Melnikova went on to secure the individual all-around gold medal at the tournament. Russian sports authorities are hoping for a similar intervention from governing bodies ahead of the Rotterdam championships.

Russia has stated it will formally appeal against the Dutch decision to both World Gymnastics and the International Olympic Committee. However, host countries of major international sports events retain the ultimate right to deny entry visas for security or political reasons.

The unfolding situation means the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will be affected by visa refusals for the second consecutive year. A similar controversy occurred at the previous championships when Israeli competitors faced entry barriers.

At the 2025 championships in Jakarta, Israeli gymnasts, including defending world floor champion Artem Dolgopyat, were denied entry to Indonesia. That decision was linked to the country's involvement in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The latest visa dispute comes as Russia continues its broader push to reintegrate its athletes into the global sports ecosystem. International sporting restrictions were implemented following the country's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, compounding earlier bans related to doping scandals.

Major restrictions stem from the uncovering of state-sponsored doping programmes surrounding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Additional sweeping bans were introduced across multiple sports disciplines following the military actions in Ukraine.

Significant changes to the sporting landscape have slowly begun to materialize over recent months. In July, the International Olympic Committee eased restrictions on Russian athletes, paving the way for potential participation in qualifying events for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

World Gymnastics cleared Russian competitors of international restrictions in May, removing the previous requirement to pass strict vetting processes for neutral status. Despite this regulatory clearance, individual national governments still control border entry requirements.

The return of Russian gymnasts to major global competitions has been gradual and uneven across different sports disciplines. No Russian athletes competed in artistic gymnastics events at the 2024 Olympic Games held in Paris.

Other sports federations maintain stricter protocols regarding Russian and Belarusian participation in team competitions. National tennis federations recently voted to uphold existing bans within prestigious international team tennis events.

During a meeting of 128 member nations, tennis officials decided that Russia and Belarus should remain suspended from competing in the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup. Those team restrictions were originally put in place by World Tennis in March 2022.

The core of the Russian women's team features athletes with formidable credentials on the international stage. Both Melnikova and Listunova were integral members of the squad that secured team gold at the delayed 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

During those Tokyo Games, the Russian team edged out a formidable United States squad that competed without Simone Biles, who had withdrawn from several events. The absence of top-tier competitors in Rotterdam alters the competitive dynamics of the upcoming championships significantly.
