The emerging wicketkeeper-batter reflects on his 185-run campaign following Pakistan's tri-nation series victory in Lahore.

Saad Baig eyes bigger scores after impressive debut series for Pakistan

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig has outlined his ambition to convert promising starts into substantial centuries after completing an encouraging debut international series for the national team.

The 20-year-old accumulated 185 runs across five matches in the recently concluded tri-nation one-day international series, helping Pakistan secure the trophy by defeating Sri Lanka in the final at Gaddafi Stadium.

Baig played a crucial role in the title-deciding fixture on Saturday, contributing a fluent knock of 74 as Pakistan successfully chased down a daunting target of 326 to claim a three-wicket victory.

Beyond his contributions with the bat, the left-hander also performed reliably behind the stumps during the tournament, claiming three catches to support his bowling attack.

Reflecting on his maiden international outing during an appearance on a Pakistan Cricket Board digital programme, Baig explained that his primary objective was maintaining the confidence he had cultivated in domestic cricket.

He emphasized the importance of backing his natural abilities regardless of match situations, whether the team had lost early wickets or required a rebuilding phase through a steady partnership.

The young batter noted that adapting his approach according to the demands of the crease proved essential, highlighting the value of constant communication with his batting partners during pressure moments.

Baig progressed steadily through Pakistan's structured age-group cricket pathways, representing the nation at under-13, under-16, and under-19 levels before captaining the side at the 2024 ICC Men's Under-19 World Cup.

During that youth global tournament, Pakistan advanced to the semi-finals before suffering a narrow one-wicket defeat against Australia in a hard-fought encounter.

Transitioning from junior cricket to the senior international arena has brought immense satisfaction, particularly as several of his former under-19 teammates have also made the step up to represent Pakistan.

Expressing gratitude for his positive start in senior colors, Baig stressed that reaching the international stage represents only the initial phase of his cricketing journey.

His immediate focus remains on continuous learning, identifying specific technical areas for improvement, and establishing consistency to serve the Pakistan national team for years to come.
