Marc Marquez leads Sepang practice as Jorge Martin struggles with injury

Championship leader Marc Marquez topped the timesheets at the Malaysian Grand Prix despite an early crash, while title rival Jorge Martin withdrew from Friday's practice session.

Marc Marquez leads Sepang practice as Jorge Martin struggles with injury

MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez set the pace during Friday's practice session at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang. Despite suffering an early fall, the Ducati rider clocked a fastest lap of 1m57.000s to secure the top spot as he continues his pursuit of an eighth world title.

The session proved difficult for title contender Jorge Martin, who is competing with a fractured wrist sustained at the Australian Grand Prix last weekend. Although cleared to ride, the Aprilia rider completed only a few laps before pulling out of the session following a scare at Turn 12.

Marquez, who holds a 10-point lead in the standings, brushed off his own crash at Turn 15 during the hour-long session. He maintained his lead until the end, finishing 0.109s ahead of Alex Marquez, who secured second place for Gresini Ducati. Ai Ogura completed the top three for Aprilia.

Speaking to the media after the session, Marc Marquez emphasised that his focus remains on his own performance rather than the physical condition of his rival. He stated that he is determined to maintain his current championship advantage as the season nears its conclusion.

The Spaniard noted that the unpredictable nature of the race weekend requires a calm approach. He highlighted that while he is monitoring the field, his primary goal is to maximise his points tally in the remaining rounds of the championship.

Martin’s early withdrawal means he faces a challenging path for the remainder of the weekend. Should he choose to continue, he will be required to participate in Q1 on Saturday morning, a session that will also feature Pecco Bagnaia, who finished 12th after a late crash.

The practice session saw several riders encounter difficulties on the Sepang circuit. Enea Bastianini and Johann Zarco were among those who suffered late crashes, impacting their final standing in the session. Bastianini managed to secure a spot in Q2, while Zarco finished 11th.

Maverick Vinales delivered a strong performance to finish eighth, marking his first appearance in Q2 since the 2025 German Grand Prix. Franco Morbidelli and Joan Mir also secured top-10 finishes, rounding out the competitive field behind the leaders.

The focus now shifts to Saturday’s qualifying sessions, where riders will battle for grid positions. The status of Martin remains a significant talking point, with his participation in the rest of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend yet to be confirmed.

Marquez, who has previously navigated his own recovery from severe injuries, maintained a cautious perspective on the medical protocols in place. He stressed the importance of staying focused on the job at hand as he aims to extend his lead in the title race.

The 2026 season has seen significant shifts in momentum, with Marquez overcoming a substantial points deficit earlier in the year. With the title fight intensifying, every session at Sepang is critical for both the championship leader and his challengers.

As teams prepare for Saturday, the focus will be on tyre management and bike setup. The performance of the Ducati and Aprilia machines in the heat of Sepang will likely dictate the outcome of the upcoming qualifying and race events.

The Malaysian Grand Prix remains a pivotal fixture on the calendar. With the championship battle reaching its climax, the performance of the top riders will be closely watched by fans and teams alike throughout the weekend.

Brief scores: 1. Marc Marquez (Ducati) 1m57.000s; 2. Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) +0.109s; 3. Ai Ogura (Aprilia) +0.167s; 4. Pedro Acosta (KTM) +0.395s; 5. Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) +0.428s; 6. Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) +0.475s; 7. Enea Bastianini (KTM) +0.505s; 8. Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) +0.548s; 9. Franco Morbidelli (VR46 Ducati) +0.638s; 10. Joan Mir (Honda) +0.669s.
