Stephen Vogt confirms return as Cleveland Guardians manager for 2027

Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt has dismissed speculation linking him to the Seattle Mariners, confirming he will lead the team again next season.

Stephen Vogt confirms return as Cleveland Guardians manager for 2027

Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt has officially put an end to speculation regarding his future, confirming that he will return to the club for the 2027 Major League Baseball season. The 41-year-old manager addressed the rumors during a press conference on Thursday.

Addressing reports that suggested he might be a candidate for the vacant managerial position at the Seattle Mariners, Vogt was clear about his intentions. He stated, "I'm here. I'm coming back," emphasizing his commitment to the Guardians organization despite external noise.

The rumors of a potential move to Seattle were fueled by Vogt’s personal ties to the region, as his family resides in Olympia, Washington. Additionally, Vogt served as the Mariners' bullpen coach in 2023 before taking the helm in Cleveland, creating a narrative of a potential return.

Vogt clarified that he has had no contact with the Seattle organization, which is currently seeking a new manager following the departure of Dan Wilson last month. "I'll be in Cleveland. I have not gotten a phone call," Vogt told reporters.

Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti also moved to silence the speculation, expressing full confidence in the manager. Antonetti stated, "I have every expectation that Voter is going to manage here for a really long time."

Antonetti further reinforced the organization's stance, adding, "We don't have any interest in Voter managing anywhere else." The executive’s comments underscore the stability the franchise hopes to maintain as they look toward the upcoming season.

Vogt, who has twice been named the American League Manager of the Year, signed a multiyear contract extension with the Guardians following the 2024 season. The terms of the deal were not publicly disclosed, which may have contributed to the recent uncertainty.

The manager acknowledged the personal challenges of his role, specifically the time spent away from his wife, Alyssa, and their three children. He noted that the distance is a difficult aspect of his professional life but remains dedicated to his duties.

Reflecting on the 2026 campaign, Vogt highlighted the resilience of his squad. The Guardians, one of the youngest teams in the league, overcame a slow start to the season to secure a division title and a deep postseason run.

Cleveland’s season concluded in the American League Championship Series, where they were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite the loss, Vogt maintained that the team’s belief in their potential remained high throughout the year.

The defeat in the ALCS extended the Guardians' World Series drought to 78 years, the longest in Major League Baseball. Vogt remains focused on the objective of bringing a championship to Cleveland in the coming years.

In addition to Vogt’s return, the organization confirmed that pitching coach Carl Willis will be back for his 15th season with the club. Antonetti praised Willis for his competitive nature and his role in developing five Cy Young Award winners.

Vogt also addressed questions regarding the limited postseason usage of starting pitcher Tanner Bibee. He explained that the decision was based on a strategic preference to utilize left-handed pitchers during the series against the Rays.

The manager noted that he held candid conversations with Bibee regarding the decision. Vogt emphasized that Bibee remains a vital component of the team’s future and that the dialogue between them was open and professional.

Looking ahead, the Guardians will focus on building upon the successes of their 2026 season. With the managerial situation now settled, the front office can turn its full attention to roster development and offseason preparations.

The Mariners, meanwhile, continue their search for a new manager after a disappointing 76-86 record in 2026. The vacancy remains one of the most significant storylines in the current MLB managerial landscape.

While managerial trades are rare in baseball, they are not entirely unprecedented. The most recent instance occurred in 2012, when John Farrell moved from the Boston Red Sox to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Despite the theoretical possibility of a trade, both Vogt and the Guardians' leadership have signaled that such a move is not on the table. The focus for the Cleveland organization is firmly on the 2027 season.

Vogt’s leadership has been widely credited for the team's ability to navigate a competitive division. His ability to integrate trade deadline acquisitions and rally the team in the AL Division Series against the White Sox was a highlight.

As the offseason begins, the Guardians will look to address specific needs to bridge the gap to a World Series title. Vogt’s commitment provides a foundation of stability as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.
